I am frequently asked by the local hunters here what they can get for US$10 000 or less? They are talking new and understand that there would then be the cost to land it in Zimbabwe, which by the time the dust has settled is 45% on top. Most want a DG capable (legal) double which is 375 minimum, but there is scope for some smaller ones too.

So first up is a Baikal, around US1500, yes?

Then Sabatti, I dont know prices well.

The Chapuis Iphisi slides in with a dollar change.

Merkels are available in South Africa for a little over US$10k.

What else?

The largest Baikal doubles I have seen are the 9.3X74 and the 45-70. Not sure if those would appeal to most PH's. Are any Baikals still available now? Not sure. I have seen Kreighoff's for 10K, but that was a sale at SCI a few years ago....good question. Hoping someone knows of a sleeper out there for 5-8K but I doubt it......FW Bill

Kevin, there is second hand double rifles regurlaly on sale here in SA I think that would be your best bet.
There is always a double advertised on our BASA group every 2nd month or so.

Thank you Frederik.

Are these friends of yours professionals or maybe looking to be a PH in the future? Just looking to hunt DG with a double rifle as a client?

Either way, when hunting such quarry it’s not the time to skimp on equipment. Getting a proper working double rifle will pay dividends when they decide later to sell it. Kreighoff and Heym will give them an excellent value while not being over the top.

Yes they are learners and PH's and just citizen hunters. The common thread is $10 maximum budget.

Zoli, also come to mind. although they at O/U so some won't consider that option.
