We have had to buzz the strip before to get caribou off of it before we could land.
Hard to believe you wouldn’t see a friggin giraffe on the strip! Lol

Have seen many different types of animals who will be in the scrub and jump out to run accross the road when a vehicle aproaches and often with disasterous results for the animal. If the giraffe was confused as to the direction of the sounds movement then it may have made its run after the plane was committed to the landing.
I havent had to try and dodge a giraffe but imagine they are a mite quicker than some of the sheep, dogs, kangaroos etc that I have encountered (sometimes literally)

When I flew into the Kalahari in 2014 the pilot flew low over the dirt runway twice. When we banked around the third time to come in for the landing I could see a truck racing down the strip in front of us. After landing it was explained to me that all parties were trying to scare animals away from the landing plane. I looked back from the way we had landed and saw many impala crossing the strip.

This one's been around for awhile and been verified.

At my home base, at night, a deer took the right main off a Piper Cherokee. Fortunately know injuries. Making low passes before landing didn't guarantee you weren't going to whack a deer, especially during the rut. It pretty much boiled down to luck.

With my son and nephew we managed to “remove” an angry buffalo bull off the airstrip with just seconds to spare before a 210 came in.

Similar work is done against kangaroos for many regional airports.
