I know this is a forum on Hunting, but thought many of you might be interested in my upcoming adventure.

I'm starting to get excited for an upcoming adventure September 1st. I work in Kenya and travel back and forth around 6 times a year, I have been looking for an Adventure bike around Nairobi for a few years but the only ones available are imported by ex pats and literally cost five times as much as here in the states.

So while working in Kenya in May I grabbed a flight down to South Africa to visit some friends and purchased a used Kawasaki KLR 650 and plan to drive it from Capetown up the continent to Kenya. And eventually onto Cairo. I have always wanted to plan a motorcycle trip East to West from Mombasa to the Atlantic through the Congo but its a little too risky even for me. We will see.

The motorcycle has been at a well known adventure bike mechanic in Capetown being fitted out.

Ive added the following
USB Power points for USB devices and air pump
Boxes and auxiliary fuel tanks
Spare tires (front and back) patch kit and tubes as well as new aggressive tires currently
tools for everything
Spare cables
Added center stand so I can work on the bike
Lifters for the handlbars for more upright position and standing
touring screen (taller)
Luggage racks
CB radio ( I know this sounds silly but will explain later)

The route will be unique as I have friends across the continent to stay with, my plan is to take my time over a year to get to Kenya. I work with multiple NGOs around the continent and will stop along the way to explore the area, wildlife, people etc.

First leg will start September 1st and begin in Capetown, I will work along the west coast to Namibia and explore the skeleton coast (I have been here many times in the past but not on a bike) I will stop over with friends in Windhoek and then leave the pavement. I will head east to Gobabis and north to Tsumkwe Namibia. I will stay a week or so here exploring the bushman tribes and this is full wildlife country. In fact the last time I took the road from Gobabis to Tsumkwe we dodges elephants part of the way, and I was in a truck at that time
:)

From Tsumkwe I will go to Maun Botswana and this is a sandy path so I will have to plan to leave very early and make sure all is in order before heading out. From Maun to Vic Falls and then through the country of Zambia where I will stay with a friend in Eastern Zambia along the border of Mozambique and chase wildlife for a while.

At this point I will cross over to Mozambique, and into Malawi where if things go as planned I will meet a 31 doctor medical team flying in from the states to Nkhotakota along the beautiful shores of Lake Malawi.

At this point I will work with the medical team ( I am their guide) and we end on safari in Malawi, once my team departs for home I will leave the bike locked up at African bible College and fly home from Lilongwe.

In 2024 I will continue from Lilongwe via Tanzania into Nairobi where I will keep the motorcycle to run around east Africa when I am working there. Someday I will plan the continued journey north from Kenya through Sudan/ Ethiopia and Egypt but that will be down the line.

The pic is the motorcycle when I purchase it, it will soon be trashed
:)
and the second pic is a rough draft of the route ( I have already made changes)

As always, I am open to suggestions an advice!

Cheers!

I have changed some of the route from this map, but you get the idea.

Very cool idea.
I hope you have an absolute blast doing this little adventure. Update us along the way.

What a great adventure! The memories will bring a smile to your face the rest of your life. Soak it in as you go. I once rented a plane, converted my license, and flew from Nelspruit, over the Kruger, up the coast of Mozambique to Malawi. Have some patience with whatever local officials you meet. You probably already know that. Good luck and have fun!

Sounds like a great trip, nice bike selection, I know the suspensions are a heckuv’ lot better than when I rode dirt bikes, but my back and knees start aching just looking at them now, looking forward to reading of your adventure.

Wow! Quite an adventure. Looking forward to seeing pics from along the way.

Fantastic adventure!

One heck of a trip! Nothing but the best for you! Safe travel!

This sounds like a wonderful adventure. I hope you can keep us updated on your progress. Will you add a GoPro and drone so we can live the adventure with you? Maybe on YouTube if not here.

I have been following on YouTube a lady from the Netherlands, Noraly, on her motorcycle travels. Currently, she is negotiating the roads through Liberia on her way to Ivory Coast, part of a northwest Africa trek. All along her journeys, if anything goes wrong, the local people seem friendly, helpful, and generous. The last two videos are below, but no African wildlife along the roads this time.

Safe travels.

When do you roughly expect to be in zambia
I plan to be in Zambia around the 8th of September, I will cross over at Vic falls or possibly Sesheke and my journey in Zambia will be to my friends place in Luangwa, where I will either pass through across river to Mozambique or backtrack north to get to Lilongwe, any advice? thank you

Thank you, and thanks for the videos, Yes I have a 360 camera and will post links to my facebook/ instagram/and youtube if that isnt agains the rules, however I am not a good self promoter and plan to enjoy the journey more than capture amazing shots of myself......

I am currently adding better shocks and front suspension support to my stock bike, I really am trying to prep it for the long haul. I chose this bike because its small enough to lift myself, and big enough to reach decent speeds on the hwy.

Wow that sounds like fun!, I have flow around kenya myself and would like to do more in the future. I bet the coast over Mozambique was amazing! were you able to land along the way along the beach?

Many years ago I read "Jupiter's Travels". I have also met a few people both driving or hitch hiking the Great North Road. Their stories are always exciting.

I really look forward to following your adventures. Have a blast!

Hey all, I head out soon and I believe everything is in order.. little nervous heading out alone but excited to experience Africa from the open. I plan to update every few days and will attempt to add pics and information here for those who care to follow. I am over the age of caring about social media however pressure from friends and folks along the way asked me to keep Facebook and Instagram up to date which I am going to attempt as well.

If one wishes to join me here are the links. If I am not allowed to post such links I apologize and please admin, remove them.

Onward,

dang, for some reason this image is HUGE!! lol
