Greetings everyone,

I am in search of my first double, in 470 nitro. I wanted to gather some of your thoughts and opinions on these two rifles.

How does the build quality of these two stack up to one another? Would love someone to get specific!
  1. Soldered joints
  2. Bluing of the metal
  3. Finishing of the wood
  4. Trigger feel
  5. Metal to metal
  6. Wood to metal.
  7. How the barrels are joined - Krieghoff doesn't appear to have a weld seam of a demi block construction? If they use more of a chopper lump type construction, then why is it not a subject of greater importance in comparisons?
If all possible I would like to stay away from the subject of the safety on the k-gun. Im just trying to avoid the entire thread developing into a debate centered around the opinions of a single feature.

Does anyone know the current msrp of the Krieghoff? The chapuis is listed on their site but can not find anything on the other.

Let’s hear it fellas!

Krieghoff....

Extra in-built safety...and mine shoots more or less to the same impact with factory ammo..

@Bomcginty - I’ve shot both Chapuis & K doubles in .470 NE, preferred the Chapuis and purchased one. Both the Kreig & Chapuis were accurate although I shot tighter groups with the Chapuis - that really proves nothing. Mechanically both guns appear High Quality and since I’m Not a gunsmith - have no opinion that matters there. The Chapuis, to my eyes, was a much better looking gun, classic lines but that doen’t matter in the field or performance, however when spending $12k-$18k for a gun it matters-to-me.
I know you didn’t want to hear about the Kreigoff “safety” but that is a major factor of that gun, it is what differentiates it from most other Double Rifles. I did Not like it, even though I think I could’ve gotten “use to it”….why would I want to even try? I’ve shot double barrel shotguns all my life and taking off those safety’s while raising the gun to shoot is “2nd nature to me”. I understand the argument that the K gun safety is “safer”…so what? Keeping the gun Unloaded is “safer” too but I’ve never had an accidental discharge NEVER. And an accidental discharge is most likely to happen after you take the safety OFF and forget to return it to safety — still possible with a Kriegoff. Since both guns are high quality and reasonably priced….You can’t go wrong with either one.

Not to mention George provides a lifetime warranty on the Chapuis if you buy from him with very easy shipment to OK

I have had several 9.3x74 Chapuis UGEX and RGEX, but have no experence with the Elan other than holding one at William Larkin and Moore's shop. I have a Krieghoff 500/416.

I love both platforms. The safety on the Krieghoff is just a different manual of arms that is easy to use. My 9.3 and 500/416 are my two favorite rifle's I own.

Either would be a good option. Pick the one that fits your eye and has the look you think of when you think DG in africa. Make sure which ever one you pick FITS YOU PERFECTLY!

IMO no good or bad, right or wrong. In the end personal choice, both of them are good and you shouldn't have any issues. In the end, as someone mentioned the one that fits better and you like more is the answer.
The difference in the cocking system - the hammers in the KGun will only engage when safety is off, unlike others where they are cocked when you break open

I did recently call George at Champlin arms and he placed the Chapuis and Krieghoff both in high regard. He did knock the Krieghoff for a lack of metal in the forend, which is a valid point of consideration. He is a very upfront and honest individual that there is no short conversation to be had with . He did take my name for a Chapuis but it sounded like there was a substantial waiting list for them.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)
