My single daughter has excepted a position at a school just north of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. As her father I am excited for her but also concerned about her safety. Are any of you familiar with this area and do I need to be concerned. I understand there are dangers everywhere in the world today but some areas are worst then others. Any info would be appreciated.

Nobody can tell but i hunted with a guy from Houston TX and his girlfriend did teach at a school close to Dar Es Salaam for one year and she had a blast this was like 5 years ago. My 24 year old daughter is only 100 miles away and i am concerned about her every day.

She should be fine.

What the name of the town or village she will be in?

When will she be traveling? for this position. Take personal items to last the year as they will be difficult to find in remote areas. like soap & tooth paste.

I spent the summer of 2000 in Nairobi and spent a great deal of time in Dar. I'm sure she will be fine as I would much rather be in Dar than in Nairobi. Street crime, AIDS orphans, petty crime, etc is much higher (or was) in Nairobi than in Dar. If she is out of the major cities in a smaller community she should be fine.

Thanks for the info and support. She will be just north of Dar Es Salaam at the Haven of Peace Christian Academy. I am sure she will be fine she has a good head on her shoulders and the Lord will watch over her. But I will worry about her. However the bright side is I can can see a trip to Tanzania in my future.

Dar like most big cities has its issues. With some caution and common sense she should be fine. It is probably good not to travel alone until she gets the lay of the land. (even after she is comfortable it doesn't hurt to travel in groups) The school will probably have guidelines for faculty and staff. You may ask them to email the guidelines to you to review. That might make you feel more comfortable.

I don't know your daughters dating situation but she should understand that as a young woman from a first world country she will be seen as a "ticket to a better life" by young men from a third world country. This is definitely true in Tanzania. A young mans motives may be less than honorable in more than one way.

You should definitely make a trip to see her while she is there. If you can make a hunting trip out of it that is even better. If not enjoy the flora and fauna. Ngorongoro Crater IMHO is one of lifes bucketlist destinations.

Your daughter should be commended for her effort to help others and make the world a better place. You should be commended for raising a daughter who looks to serve other before herself. Mungu Bariki Wewe

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
