Mark, I have been noticing quite a few outfitters charging for baboons now. I have seen prices from $100 all the way up to $800 on price lists recently.
Maybe you are going to the wrong outfitters?
I've hunted with Stuart Williams and Rubi Nul of
@Tally-Ho HUNTING SAFARIS twice because when Stuart says there are no nickle and dime add on fees, he means it!
A month or two ago I asked Stuart if he offers free baboon shooting as opportunity kills to every hunter to which he replied, "Yes, shoot them all". Stuart did follow with if a hunter wants a baboon specific bait pile set up where a hunter will sit on ambush, he stated that he may have to charge something for the bait pile but no trophy fees on those vermin.
One needs to ask before the hunt what a random baboon or dedicated baboon hunting will cost.
The baboon I shot
@Tally-Ho HUNTING SAFARIS had eluded their rifles all year and continued to destroy things at their camp.
Note: The business model a lot of South African outfitters is a small profit on the day rates and larger profits on trophy fees. So a baboon only hunt would probably not be free. But ask your favorite outfitter when they have gaps in their schedules, if they have a baboon problem, and if adding a day or two of baboon hunting will break your bank!
I've watched YouTube videos of hunters near the Eastern Cape of South Africa perched up in the mountains shooting troupes of baboons, shot after shot, at 300 yards or more.
Phase I: CBL Lion in Kalahari coordinated by
@Tally-Ho HUNTING SAFARIS
Expectations, we all have them. How often are ALL of one’s expectations fulfilled? For me, this was the case in my second hunt with Stuart Williams’ Tally Ho Safaris. Granted, my expectations were realistic based on much research and having hunted with Tally Ho a year prior. My wife tells me that I overthink everything. To that I respond, thinking is my superpower. I plan for the worst and hope for the best!
The background is that I hunted with Stuart and his PH Rudi Nel for four days last year enroute to a Zimbabwe elephant hunt. I came back to Tally Ho because they did everything right...
Phase II: Cull hunt

Cull Hunt at @Tally-Ho HUNTING SAFARIS – October 2022
I had arrived in SA on Sunday evening. We traveled to the Kalahari on Monday, hunted lionesses on Tuesday thru Thursday morning, and drove to Limpopo the remainder of Thursday. (
See the thread Kalahari Lionesses with Tally Ho Safaris) The next seven days at Tally Ho would be a cull hunt for critters that Stuart had too many of. I had my trophies in the two lionesses. No self-imposed pressure now, just hunting for the pleasure of it.
Friday morning at Tally Ho, I verified my 375 and 458 were sighted in at 100...
Taking a rifle capable of small groups at 500 yards or more for baboons would be worth the hassle of dragging it halfway around the world.
