Custom Mauser questions

I have a poorly sporterized 8mm Mauser ( not a German 98k but a foreign replication) and my soon to be wife needs a proper hunting rifle that fits her. I'm thinking of having it stripped down, rebarreling it, and putting it back together for her. My question is threefold... is it worth having all of that work done to it, will a 270 win fit that length action, and who would come highly recommend to do the work ? It doesn't need to be a fancy piece but I would insist that it is quality work, utterly reliable, and of course accurate. Thank you in advance, gentlemen.

I’m a big fan of hunting with repurposed Mauser actions, but I’m not a technician, so I can’t say whether .270 will fit an M98 action. I can say that I owned a 98 that had been rebarreled to .243 and it cycled well enough.

You’re the only one who can determine whether the work you’re talking about will be “worth” it. You could probably buy a secondhand .270 rifle for a lot less ... but then you wouldn’t have the pleasure of seeing a disused, badly sporterized classic be resurrected as something special.

I have been thinking of doing the same with a badly sporterized Springfield 1903-a3 for my daughter. Check out Pac-Nor barrels. I have heard great things about their barrels. They will do the gunsmithing for you for what appears to be a reasonable price. I wouldn't think it would be an issue to rebarrel your M98 to 270, there have been a ton converted to 30-06....

Using Pac-Nor's online ordering, to send them my 03-A3 to have them rebarreled it to 270 win with a target crown and Cerakote finish on the barrel, $650... Of course, my idea of reasonable may not be the same as other people's, such as my wife. I have not used their service yet myself, so may be some cost that I am overlooking, but that is about half of what I have been quoted by a local Smith

No, no wood included. For another $150 -$200 or so, Boyd's makes some decent looking laminate stocks. The rifle I have has a decent stock already.... Somebody put a really ugly almost black finish on it, but there appears to be decent figure underneath, hopefully she will clean up nice. The barrel on the other hand looks like someone took a pipe wrench to it then used it to drive nails

My 2¢, A refurb is throwing good money after bad. Buy a nice Tikka or Howa for less money and use the savings for good glass. From my perspective, rebarreling a Mauser, Springfield or Enfield with their abysmally slow lock time for average accuracy is an exercise in visions of grandeur. YMMV, yada yada.

Redriverjake, I’m going to have to agree with others that an off the shelf rifle of known quality and safety would be my recommendation. Customs can have lots of “gotchas”. You want your honey to start out with a good rifle to keep her interest. If she keeps with it (not my experience), then a top custom could be in the cards for a future “special” situation.

Yep, I can't argue with that. Tikka, Howa, Savage are all great rifles for the money. They shoot great off the shelf, probably a much better, cheaper option.
But on the other hand, the OP is wanting a rifle that Fits his soon to be wife.... Something a little more custom I assume.

For myself, I'm looking to give my daughter something that has a little bit more personal meaning than a Walmart special. My favorite rifle is a sporterized Springfield that my dad put together for me when I was a kid. While maybe not the most accurate rifle, it will still group around roughly 1 inch... The old two stage military trigger isn't the best... It's a heavy rifle that only gets heavier as the day goes on... But, it fits me and is still the rifle my dad built, just for me.
As for the OP, I say go for it, you're only going to be out a few hundred bucks. Give the future wife something from the heart. Who knows, maybe in the future she will repay you with that nice custom rifle you have always dreamed of

I bought her a beautiful outfit with beeman arrows just like I .used to use.

In 3 weeks she destroyed the peace and harmony Harmony that I shared with my drunken ,slobering, f bomb, friends and once she broke it all up she decided that it wasn't for her, that is unless I wanted to go.

Hey fellas, good reading all of your replies. This ole girl here is a bit different. She's from Zimbabwe and her dad was a PH so she grew up in Safari camps all over Africa. She's quite a good shot and she has an eye for well put together firearms. We are not too far from the point where we are going to start traveling and hunting quite a bit and a couple of the countries we want to hunt don't allow the import of anything that was a previous or a current military clambering, hence the 270win. I have been in touch with a man that strikes me as extremely knowledgeable and competent that will do the rifle up for her and at a price I can live with but by no measure cheap. It will be made into a take down configuration and stocked to her dimensions, can't wait to see the look on her face...
