Looking at a cz 28 gauge bobwhite shotgun. Seems folks talk about very heavy trigger weights. Anyone with experience with this shotgun? Ideas to lighten the triggers would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, I have shot the 28, 20, and 12 ga at a friends ranch and they all shot fine.
In fact the 20 gauge handled a bit like my favorite Parker.

I've read into them. Seems 5-7 pounds is the norm, which seems to be common for a shotgun. I imagine a good gunsmith could get them lowered a bit. Dont know if the cost is 2x that of a single trigger?

Have one in 20 ga. Both triggers right at 7#. Very nicely finished, sleek little shotgun. The triggers seem fine for me but I guess some like light shotgun triggers?? I dunno

That’s a pretty heavy trigger pull, particularly on a light shotgun. 3# on the first barrel, 3 1/2 on the second would be more the norm.

Yes, 7# is a bit heavy by most standards for serious shotgun shooting but I grew up and learned on an old hammer gun with huge creep and very heavy pull so got used to it without flinching or pulling off. The Bobwhite triggers are fairly clean breaking and even in let off. I imagine a decent gunsmith could get them down to a lighter let off without compromising safety.

I have one in 20 gauge - it is my favorite dove gun. It is lively for me and I really like the cheap practice with double triggers. Heavy triggers haven't bothered me.

Working my way up to a double eventually. Ammo is a lot cheaper in 20 gauge than an nitro express.

Regarding trigger weight, I guess it depends on how you are going to use it. If you have gloves on and its 10 degrees out, I wouldn't want to have a 3 pound trigger. 7 would be just fine.

I guess in an ideal world 5 would be perfect. Not sure I would spend the money to get them down to 5 though.

Shoot it a few hundred times and re-evaluate

I just checked the trigger pull with an inexpensive Wheeler Engineering gauge.
My CZ Bobwhite 20 gauge with 28 inch barrels, has a 5.5# right trigger to 6# left trigger.

It handles like a dream, and I broke the first 20 of 25 clays with mine.
The trigger pull was not a factor, mounting and proper swing makes it work.

I buy and sell a lot of guns, but this is a keeper.

Thanks for the comments. Bought a 20 gauge today. I haven’t shot it yet but the fit and finish are acceptable. Light weight, swings sweet and the triggers are not that heavy. All in all, I think it’s at bargain at less than $700.

Any idea where CZ gets them from ? Turkey?

I have a 28ga. I haven’t weighed the trigger pulls. They are a bit heavy but not bad. For the $$$, a good buy.

Yes, I know the original Bobwhites, were built in the town of Huglu, Turkey a town that has a cottage industry, in building shotguns. I read an article in a reputable magazine a few years ago and looked up the town and verified.
A friend from Texas, that lives in Istanbul, confirmed this.
Some craftsman make stocks, some make actions, some barrels, and a major factory, with high tech capabilities, assembles with hand fitting as appropriate.

The town of Huglu did not, at my time of reading, have a major hotel, but did have a couple of skeet ranges.

Huglu attempted to sell direct in the US, but without a major name behind them, struggled in the US market.
I have a HUGLU, brand shotgun, circa 2000, marketed as ARMSCO/HUGLU, in 12 gauge, with some very nice wood, a POW stock, and double triggers. it’s a shooter.

Then CZ-USA, picked up the line in early to mid 2000’s.

My 20 gauge Bobwhite is from that era, and wood, fit, finish, and triggers show good craftsmanship, at a very affordable price, in 2006, of $550. The first versions had, in addition to double underlumps, a Greener cross bolt. They won’t shoot loose.

I should have bought a 12, 16, and 28
gauge then.

I have not handled the new G2 versions, that have no Greener cross bolt, and with a matte finish. From pictures, the wood looks very plain.

I have one of the earlier 20 ga Bobwhites- as posted earlier- nice slick little shotgun! Picked up a more recently made 20 ga Sharp Tail about 6 mos ago. Very similar feel but the Sharp Tail may suit larger shooters a little better than the slightly more petite Bobwhite. Not a lot of difference but some. The fit/function and mechanics on the Sharp Tail is equal that of the older Bobwhite but the newer stock wood and finish and pressed checking is obviously a marketing price point cost saving measure with the Sharp Tail. The fore end on the Sharp Tail is a modified beaver tail that has a tapered profile. It is, IMO, actually a very ergonomic design that seems to bridge the gap nicely between a beefy beaver tail and a thin splinter fore end. I also ordered an extra set of tubes for my CZ 20s so I could match chokes. For hunting I like to match chokes in both barrels- never could figure the practicality of different chokes for each barrel. For example I like full and full for lead pheasant, imp mod and imp mod for steel, mod and mod for lead dove…. etc.

I put my Sharp Tail through the paces on clay birds a couple of days ago and have no complaints. Now… just need to plan an upland bird hunt to scratch that itch. Dang- I wish those spur fowl and sand grouse were a little closer! :)

As an odd aside, every BRNO/CZ firearm I’ve ever owned and shot has a very unique “sound and feel” mechanically. Very subtle but discernible… to me:)

I picked up a 20ga G2 Bobwhite from a local shop yesterday. They are retailing for $649. The CZ website has all the models listed as black chrome receiver and barrels but this one has a very nicely done case coloring on all metal parts other than the barrels which are in gloss black chrome. The wood is plain and budget but fit and finish are very nice, wood to metal fit is tight, timed screws on the extended tang, etc. the action is quite tight but I suspect will get a bit better with a few hundred reloads. Triggers are decent, I will put a gauge on them in a bit. Gun comes with a compact hard case, 5 chokes, choke tool and a gun sock for the receiver/stock and one for the barrels/forend.

I got a set of A-zoom snap caps with the shotgun so I can get a lot of practice getting used to double triggers. With 28" barrels the shotgun has a decent balance a finger width ahead of the hinge pin and swings nicely. Remarkably quiet without ear pro with the muzzle so far from my face though of course ear pro will be the norm. Overall, I am quite pleased with this little shotgun, for the price point it is considerably nicer than what I had expected. They have an upgraded model with grade 3 walnut, decorative sideplates, case colored, etc but at over double the price. I think the Bobwhite G2 lacks little at this price.

I walked up a trail on my property and properly blooded my new gun (and first SxS) 10 minutes after assembly.

I have both the 20 and 28 gauge models. Both are fine hunting shotguns, especially for the money.

@ET1775
Thanks for the timely review.
I had been searching for any related info.
Glad to help. I'll update with trigger pull weights when I get down to the garage. Front trigger was noticeably longer and heavier than the rear. I look forward t re-testing after well broken in.
