Dangerous Game question for our PHs

Ok, on my lion and buff hunt this summer I am taking my Ruger guide gun in 416 ruger. I bought a Nikon monarch 1-4 scope and put on it. I've shot quite a few rounds through it and it's a great scope, holds zero like a champ with the heavy recoil. I also have an eotech holographic site that I use on my Ar-15 that is my patrol rifle. I would like to get some feedback on which sight system would be better to use for DG in close quarters. I'm not going to bring both sights so which would be the better option. I like the eotech for target acquisition and I can still use the iron sights if needed but.... With the scope it's better to thread the needle if needed. What are ya'lls suggestions? Thanks

IMO the one with the widest field of view...
None of your shots should be at excessive range so finding one with the widest site view, will give you a way better chance of connecting when the preverbial defacation hits the fan...

I have seen to many clean misses at close range with scoped rifles.

Gizmo, the setup sounds fine for the first shot. When the paw paw hits the fan, take the scope off and go in with open sights.

No Kidding. I have seen many more clean misses at <20 yards than at 200. It doesn't help that by the time you are that close it's usually to dispatch a down animal and adrenaline is running high, out of breath and shooting off hand without a rifle rest.

Thanks for the input. That's why I was wondering about the eotech. It's designed for cqb. Target acquisition is instant and is designed to shoot with both eyes open. We use them for everything from midrange to cqb in clearing houses.

For what it's worth if I was in the middle of clearing a building and a lion came running down the hall at me I would probably sh$t myself.

The only reason I suggest the scope is to see the unseen things like branches, other animals downrange, etc. I can't imagine your first shot at a running animal. Of course I have worn glasses for 45 years. Just keep it turned down to 1 to 2 power. If they are further away you have time to turn it up.

Right. That's the reason I am deferring to the experts. This being my first DG experience I want to make sure I'm prepared with the right equipment. I can deal with getting myself eaten because I screwed up but would be awfully pissed if I get eaten because of an equipment failure or short coming.

Quite honestly I would not go with the scope if you are proficient with the eotech it is the obvious choice and the advantages are obvious.

If you are planing to do a bunch of hunting apart from the DG...,.scope yes, but if I interpret it right and lion and buff are your species......, eotech.

Not to mention if we were to consider the sheer speed of lion charges the widest field of view and specific design has a major advantage... Unless you don't mind your ph connecting should you not be able to adjust in short time with a scope... (The latter being a real scenario we are often confronted with)

IMO The little brush (apart from the obvious big sticks which you'll see open sights as well) will have zero effect on the caliber you are using especially if we were to consider the ranges you "should" be shooting at.

I am sure Jacques (Hartzview) would agree with me on this one..

Widest field of view would be my suggestion.

i will be right behind you if you are sh$tting $ collecting them as fast as your producing them....

I use a Trijicon 1x4 on my double and 2 other heavy rifles, mainly because of my eye sight. My suggestion would be to go with whatever you use the most and are comfortable with.

I would go with a scope because that is what I am used to. If I used an eotech all the time that would be the obvious choice.

must confess that i cant make my mind up on this one........i think i would push you towards the scope for giving you the option of some magnification, especially with the lion and you possibly having to try and pick it out in the bush. however i agree with jaco wanting to have as wide open a view of whats happening if something does go wrong ,which isnt a regular occurence though. also not that impressed with my eotech as i have to put it on full power to be able to see the illuinations in the zambian sun and against the dry bush.

To me I would want my first shot to be the best I could do. I think the scope gives you that. If you knew the shoots were going to be under say under 40 yds for both lion and buff then maybe the other sight system would be better.

I can only base the scope being ok based on my sons lion hunt. He had his scope on 3 power as that was as low as it went. He hit the lion 3 times with two of them as it was running at him. He had no problem picking the lion up in the scope. That was with the first shoot at 75 yds and then 50 and a little under 50 as she came at him.

Thank all of you for the advice. Jaco I think I'm going to put it on the rifle and try it out. If it feels as natural as it does with my patrol rifle I'm going to go with it. I'll train with it and see how it goes.

Just curious - but what is a "patrol rifle"?
