I recently spotted a group of hogs on the hunting lease and immediately notified my buddy in Michigan to come on down. I sold my Merkel last fall and have yet to replace it so requested that he bring one for me. He hunted with a Krieghoff 500/416 loaded with Barnes 300 gr TSX and I carried his Heym 88b in 450/400. I think the Heym was loaded with woodleigh softs. First day out after about a mile walk we could hear the hogs arguing and rustling about. With a good wind and cover we were able to get about 30 yards from the first hog that presented a good shot. The 500/416 dropped him and a group of 20 or so exploded out of the swamp, he was able to drop a second hog and I connected with one before all disappeared. I’ve been hunting hogs since the early 2000’s. I’ve killed several thousand at night with a wide variety of night vision and black rifles however, walking with big bore doubles is by far my favorite technique.

Sounds like a great time! I imagine that is a fun hunt! I envy you!

I don't mind snakes generally, but as a South Louisianan I truly loathe a cottonmouth. Unlike a typical rattlesnake, the things are a bit territorial - and seriously unfriendly.

Nice shooting.

That looks like a fun way to spend an afternoon!

Nice cruiser! I have a BJ42LX and HJ47. We were in the 47. They add to the adventures, doubles and cruisers play well together!

Double's in two of my favorite double rifle rounds. Looks like a very fun hunt.

That is a nice sized cottonmouth. I hate'em, as they are a very aggressive snake.

Congrats

I'M WILLING TO HELP OUT IF YOU NEED TO CLEAR SOME HOGS OUT, BRINGING MY DOUBLE 450/400.
IS THE MEAT GOOD? I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY EAT THERE.

I WILL ALSO CARRY MY RUGER BLACKHAWK FLATTOP .44 SPECIAL, LOADED WITH THE FIRST 3 CHAMBERS WITH SNAKE SHOT, AS I DO WHEN I'M ON MY FARM IN SOUTH LOUISIANA.

A WATER MOCASSIN ALMOST KILLED MY DAD WHEN I WAS 2 WEEKS OLD. MY MOTHER OFTEN REPEATED THE STORY.

I HATE SNAKES, AND LIVING NEAR THE MANCHAC SWAMP, NEAR LAKE MAUERPAS, I'M NEVER FAR FROM A WEAPON FOR SNAKES. I KILL 2-3 EVERY YEAR ON MY BACK PORCH.

BUT AS A CHEF, I WANT THE CHALLENGE TO TAKE, CLEAN AND PREP GOOD HOG MEAT AND COOK IT, BY MUSCLE GROUP AND VARIOUS COOK METHODS.
THE ONES I GOT IN SOUTH TEXAS WERE REALLY GOOD EATING.

Can't stand a Cottonmouth either. Far too many of them in Arkansas also. Will kill any and all we see when working the lease prior to deer season.

Until I ended up in the hospital for three days with a copperhead bite (4courses of anti-venom!) I didn’t know that copperheads, rattlers and cottonmouths all have the same type of venom and use a common anti-venom. I hate the bastards and kill every one I see. Have a jar of rattles collected on our farm.

We gave these away but they seemed fat and healthy. I’ve had many processed over the years and all have been good. I’d be happy to take you hunting but this group vanished! Ive been flying over several times daily and walked it 2 more times with no luck. The club has ~800 acres and it’s tucked into panther swamp federal refuge. Overall the numbers are way down. Around 2008 the USDA based a helicopter with shooters at the county airport and they have certainly done a good job! There’s also a government trapping program that is very effective. The good ole days of hog hunting have been gone for several years but I always manage to find them on occasion.

@missippian
That would be about as much fun as you could have with your clothes on.
Fast and furious action with beautiful rifles. It's also great fun with a fast handling shotgun loaded with solid slugs for those of us that can't afford a double.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
