Has anyone used a drop bottom duffel and a hard sided takedown shotgun case to take your rifle to Africa? I went to Alaska this way this year and it worked great. I used one of Cabelas' aluminum breakdown shot gun case which is 36" long and easily holds a rifle with a 24" barrel and the stock. I then put that into a 38" Badlands Terra Glide which is really a bow case but holds the gun case perfectly. The only downside was that the weight adds up fast. You can get more clothes in the top part and some ammo but will get to 50# fast. Do you think this might work with another carry on and a laptop case full of clothes binocs , camera and such? Will, i hope be going from the states to frankfurt then on to Namibia. Then a charter to the Caprivi. Thanks

as you indicated the weight adds up quickly. You have about 25LB just in the case and travel bag then add your rifle or second rifle and wham-o you are looking at 40LB. then you add your top quality soft rifle slips and you are looking at close to 45LB. (you need these to keep your rifle in safe condition on the PH vehicle.) I am not sure what you will add to this other than your field backpack. and you are done.

Clothing, shoes, belt, knife and ammo will have to go into another bag.

ammunition will not be allowed in this bag if traveling to africa. Check the airlines information on Rifles and ammunition.

I have used exactly the combination you did several times going to Canada - worked great for a sxs shotgun. I did not on my first trip to Africa (Namibia) because my son and I were taking three rifles. Tufpaks worked just fine. The second trip, I didn't consider it because the drill in Namibia is far the baggage handlers to separate the rifles from the rest of the luggage, and I was sure they would miss the breakdown case. Those potential unintended consequences worried me enough to stick with the tufpak. Will do the same this summer.

I would also add that a large duffle and rifle case create a lot af weight. I have to watch it going to Canada, because you will exceed weight long before you exceed the cube of a large duffle.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
