I just found out… Another hoop to jump through. I’m setting to depart August 27 on Emirates from San Francisco.
I’m not certain what license they refer to under “Firearm license”. 4452? SAPS?

You need prior approval to carry firearms, weapons and ammunition with you on your trip. Submit your request at least three working days before your scheduled departure and within one month of travel. Please note that our offices are open from Monday to Friday.

Important information:

  • We will review your request and send you a confirmation email once it is approved. Completing this form does not mean you are automatically approved to carry the items on your flight. You should not proceed to the airport if you have not yet received our confirmation.
  • It is mandatory to fill in all the fields in the form unless marked as optional.

I have never heard of the 4452...BUT

CBP Form 4457 is proof that to the airline AND ARRIVING COUNTRY that you are the legal owner of the firearm.
It also shows the CBP previous ownership of the firearm when you return the States and that you did not purchase it overseas....

You need to get this completed at a CBP office ASAP...

Not sure where you are headed, but if you are going to Africa you should consider getting ahold Riflepermits.com or one of the other business that helps do the firearm import....

Typo… 4457. Posting through my phone. I already have everything done though Henry. Just trying to make others aware. Fill in the blanks for your final destination…

Update from Henry @ Riflepermits.com:

Dear Sir

Yes all in order from our side, we only get the approved printed permits from the SA Police around 1-2 days prior to arrival; we will email to you. You don’t need this permit to get the Emirates authorization.

Kind regards

I have done this application with Emirates several times. It seems daunting first time but apart from requiring a little time and filling in some details it's not too bad. And, Emirates is pretty firearms friendly so it's worth making the effort.
I think the section asking for details / copy of your Firearms License applies to thse countries ( like here in New Zealand ) that issues Firearms Licenses to firearms owners. If your conntry / state doesn't have a license system I guess you just enter something like " State of California does not issue Firearms Licenses to firearms owners ". I guess that should work as plenty of American hunters fly with checked in firearms on Emirates with no issue at all.
Just be sure to have copies of all your Emirates paperwok when you check in. I do when checking in in NZ but they have never taken any copies from me. A couple of times I was asked to sign additional forms declaring compliance with ammo limits and that the rifle was in a safe condition etc. A minor hassle but the Emitrates agents were always helpful and pleasant.

Very Helpful! Thank you!

One odd occurrence happened when filling out my Emirates firearms declaration. It would not allow submission without the Firearms license number field filled in with at least a number. I tried submitting with a statement that said: United States (Nevada) does not issue a firearm license for a rifle and it wouldn’t except it. I finally put in 00 and it allowed submission… California does require a New Resident Report of Firearm Ownership! I’m a NV Resident…

I’ll report if it was accepted.

BTW, I talked to someone at customer support and they were clueless as to how to proceed.

Update:

I’m glad to inform you that our Group Security team has approved your request to carry firearms and ammunition under reference TF/ 2024 / 01126

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Firearms and ammunition must be packed separately.
  • Ensure that the firearms are free from ammunition and if possible, dismantled and packed inside a suitcase or standard gun case.
Here’s what you must know:

  • Ammunition must be securely stored in a strong, sealed box packed inside a suitcase, surrounded by other contents.
  • You can carry a maximum of 5KG of ammunition per passenger. Each pack of ammunition is also limited to a weight of up to 5KG.
  • The firearms and ammunition are carried only as checked baggage and are strictly prohibited inside the cabin or the aircraft deck.
Read more about our Dangerous Goods Policy through this link.

Let us know if you have other queries or you can call us.

Kind Regards,

The Emirates Team

Yes.

Step 1: You need a 4457 from CBP signed and stamped from US Customs

Step 2: You log into your Emirates account and complete all that info, including upload a PDF of step 1, including an upload of your invitation letter for safari. They state you need to do this >30 days from departure but I've seen them approve in as little as 3 days and

I’m good. All done. See my update…

This post was to make everyone, who needs to be, aware of vetting the process completely…

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.
