Fallow Deer New Zealand Hunt

Hey guys,

A few buddy's and I are heading to New Zealand mid May for a DIY Tahr (chamois) hunt. We'll have a few days after we come off the mountain and I would like to find a ranch that has fallow and would give us access for a fee.

I've watched a couple youtube videos of guys hunting on their own on big properties for fallow and it looks awesome.

Any help/ advice would be appreciated! If not fallow, does anyone have a connection for a property with goats or wallaby or something....?

Excellent trophies in NZ. Chamois - hard work and you need to be absolutely fit.

Wallabies and kangaroos are in Australia. Different countries.

That's what I thought too Dr. Ray. When I found out, I even ran it past a guy I know that's from New Zealand, and he said the same thing you did. He was rather condescending about the poor stupid American that couldn't keep his countries straight.

The next week he came running up to me and said "you were right! I had no idea Wallabies were in New Zealand and they've been there for a very long time!" They're on the south island and on some properties, are becoming quite a nuisance.

Wallabies are small unlike Roos. A 222 with a 50 grain bullet is more than adequate - suggest head shots only if you want the skin.
Depending what breed of wallaby they make an excellent tanned hide and roast wallaby (hubs quarter) is excellent - no cholesterol.
Oz sells a mighty lot of too meat to Russia - high protein, no fat etc and cheap meat.
Make sure you bake properly though.
Enjoy your trip.
You may want to hunt a red deer in New Zealand too. They are truly magnificent.

Good luck on your hunt. I am heading to NZ to hunt red stag in the roar on the 13th! Arapawa ram and fallow are also on my list with Four Seasons Safaris. Wallabies are on the list for evening hunts. I was told to bring 10 boxes of ammo for them. This should be fun!

I have fallow but am in Texas not New Zealand but I totally get it!!!!! I hope y’all have an awesome time and find what y’all are looking for. If you need an awesome taxidermist when you get back give me a shout and I’d be glad to help you out! I know fallow and I look at them every day.

Roo and wallaby hide is very light but very strong.

Sweet Sonny! I want to do the red stag soon. Starting here as it's a lot more economical 10 boxes of ammo! Sounds like you are going to have a blast. Write up a report when you get home. Would love to hear how it went with 4 seasons.

Roos are very much hArder to hunt.

Try Australia for a hunt. Suggest 22/250 for Roos.
I have all of my roo pelts away. new wife!!!

Wallabies are a pest here in NZ .
From the Mckenzie country to Timaru in the South Island is the home of them .
Free to hunt on DOC land and most farms .
Good fun to .

There are actually three different species of wallaby in NZ as well .
Only two species can be hunted though .
Darma wallabys are in pockets around Rotorua on private farmland and public land .
But it is the Bennetts Wallaby that lives in the South Island in South Canterbury and North Otago that are hunted most .
They are a major problem for farmers who when approached usually are pleased to let you hunt on there properties .
The Bennetts Wallaby grows to around 80 cm tall and can weigh up to 20 odd kilos .
The skins can make a fine addition to the trophy room .
If you would like to hunt these critters 50by50 email these guys in Geraldine .
They are the Department Of Conservation , a govt department and should be able to put you amongst them .
geraldine@doc.govt.nz .
Remember there are no costs to hunt them they are a pest remember .
You can shoot as many as you want .
But they get real cunning and can be quite a challenge .

The only place Ihave access to for fellow is a high country station which has wallabys as well .
But they only allow a few people on .
They are saving them for rich American hunters now as they have some wicked trophies on there land ,LOL !
But a lot of the land that has wallabys onit also carry wild populations of Fellow deer .
Fellow deer numbers have been building up here for a while now .
They are wide spread now and getting shot in places they never have been before .
The DOC office in Geraldine that I gave you the email address of will no dought be able to help you with your Fellow hunt as well .
Give them a shout and see what they say .
Google Department Of Conservation New Zealand and have a browse through there hunting section .
Areas to hunt , species to hunt and a lot of information you need is all there .
Have a good map of NZ withyou so you know what they are talking about .

Like others have posted, Wallabies are a pest in much of New Zealand. Sheep farmers hate them as they compete with their sheep for food.
Here are the ones that I shot one night on one farm on the South Island. I used a borrowed .223 bolt rifle.

Those are awesome buffybr! That's exactly what I'd like to find! How many of hours hunting did it take to hunt them? I'm assuming with a spotlight? Looks fun!
