FAQ - Will the performance change if I shorten my barrel?

Define performance. Velocity is generally if not always reduced when a shorter barrel is used and compared against a longer barrel. Depending on caliber, type of powder and bullet weight used the reduction in velocity varies from +/- 30 FPS to 80 FPS per inch of reduction. Will using a 22" barreled 30-06 result in the loss of an animal that would have been recoverable if shot with a 25" or 26" barrel, probably not. At least that has been my experience for the distances I normally shoot at. Long range hunters might benefit from a longer barrel but I'm only speculating on that possibility.

Emotionally I’ve always liked a 24” barrel on a 30-06. But the shorter the barrel, physics says the stiffer it gets reducing harmonics thus it should improve shot to shot accuracy.
If one uses an appropriate bullet and puts it where it should go, who cares how long/short the barrel is.
JMO and $.02 Worth. Couldn’t buy a cheap beer for that!:ROFLMAO:

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
