Favorite 7mm Rem Mag factory ammo for elk

We just got back from a New Mexico elk hunt. My son in law was using a browning A bolt in 7 Rem mag . It likes Berger VLD’s,
Hornady GMX and SST’s. The GMX worked great on his bull.
This exit hole is shown below. Also is some practice shots. Ringing a small steel ram at 560 yards
He snuck in and killed his bull at 87 yards

Either of your bullets will work great on an elk

I killed a lof elk shooting Federal Premium with the 150gr Sierra Gameking bullet. I used those rounds just because I picked up a case of them for a real good price.

If I was to buy factory rounds now I'd look at the Barnes Vortex rounds in 140grain TTSX bullet.

My 7mag likes 168 accubond LR and I took a very nice bull in 2022 at 240 yards with that combo.

I am assuming you will be hunting elk? I have been on many successful elk hunts (and few where things went sour.) Our camp has taken over 100 elk in the past 25 years. Some observations I've made over the years: We limit our shots to under 250 yards and take only broadside shots. Either of the bullets you chose will work fine. BUT the A-frame will penetrate better with a shoulder shot or if the shot isn't perfect. Having two holes in an elk is almost always better than one, as there is a better blood trail. A big bull elk is a tough animal. I think equal to any Africa antelope of similar size. When we wounded animals, it wasn't from bad bullet construction but from bad bullet placement. We are big fans of Barnes TSX/ TTSX. Have seen elk taken with 7-08, 270 win, 30-06, 308 win, 358 win, 7x64 mauser, 7mm Rem Mag., 375 ruger, 375 H&h, 450-400 nitro express. All of them work with good shot placement. If you think you can get closer, do it! Easier to kill a bull at 200 yards than it is at 400.
Sorry for the long post... Probably more information than you were looking for! (Also advice you receive on the inter web isn't worth very much ; )

For elk i use mainly 160 grain Nosler Partitions in my 7mm RM. Never shot an elk at much over 150 yards, Never needed to. Just put the first one in the right place.

Accubond LR bullets have worked great for me in my 7mm RM. I’ve also had good success with 180 grain berger VLDs. I’ve become a fan of barnes because we generally get pass-throughs a with them.

I like 140 gr bullets in the 7mm. In my 7 mm RUM I shoot the Barnes 145gr LRX. They now make the 139 gr LRX for the 7mm which I think would also be a great bullet. Personally, I like a little more speed than a heavier bullet.

Consider Barnes 160 grain at 2950 fps. My gun likes them

thanks I shoot Barnes 570g TSX's in my 500 Jeffery. Great bullets!

The 175Gr Remington Core Lokt is an excellent choice for elk. Not the most modern bullet choice, but the 220Gr Remington Core Lokt (fired out of a .30-06 Springfield) serves me extremely well in in both Africa & the United States.

I would spend a little extra on custom hand loaded ammunition. Pendleton Ammunition has an excellent reputation and delivers a quality product. I shoot their 175 ELDX load and have cloverleaf groups at 100 yards.

Hi, I have a bid on a BDL in 7mm Rem Magnum, hope to win it and have it in a couple of weeks. Right now I'm looking at Swift 160g A-Frames and Rem 175g Corelokts

Thanks,
Yes to Aframe no to Remington. We shoot Barnes 160g exclusively in our 7mm Mags. Can't go wrong

Aframes and partitions over corelokt. I’m a converted Hammer and CEB raptor guy for serious on game loads. I’d go to Choice ammunition or Hendershots for semi-factory loads in your choice of bullet.

Thanks I plan to shoot them to get used to the rifle and get it sighted in "roughly" then load 175g A-Frames to around 2900 fps or so. In a pinch I wouldn't think twice about using them on elk. My son got his first elk running with a 130g Corelokt out of his 270 Win. I'm a big fan of A-Frames.

This 300g A-Frame retained 299.5g of it's weight after hitting a 9' brown bear just behind his right shoulder as he faced me diagonally at 13 yards. The bullet was found in the hide of his left thigh.
