Fines for overweight ammunition

Question please. I always see the weight limits for both ammunition and stored luggage. Can you take more ammunition if you are willing to pay a fine? Any idea for how much the fine is please? Qatar airlines

I don't have any confirmed information, however I would doubt it. Unlike general luggage, the weight limit for ammunition is a dangerous goods issue with international standards. Hopefully someone with direct knowledge can comment.

You cannot legally take more than 5 kg’s of ammunition, no matter what. This is part of international air travel regulations, not an airline policy. You do not get to simply pay overweight charges and travel with excess ammo.
This is one area to not be stupid and try to see what you can get away with. I have had ammo weighed, more often than not.

I've only had ammo weighed once, but I would follow this advice. No sense in pushing on this. Besides 5kg is 11lbs of ammo, that's quite a bit if talking rifle ammo.

I've never been over the 5 Kg (11 lbs) limit and no one has ever checked. Both flying in the US and to Africa.

Exactly how much ammo do you plan on taking that you are approaching this weight limit? A box (20 cartridges) of 375H&H weighs 888 grams...so you could pack up to 100 round of ammo. How long is your safari and how many animals are you planning on taking that you would even need half of that?

I would think if they are fining you, you could also be getting your property confiscated, in this case the excess ammo

I think you're good. But weigh them to be certain. The 500NE is the wildcard for me, can't estimate that in my head, but I think you'll be under 11lbs quite easily.

Put it on your kitchen scale and see what you have, but it looks good. You'll most likely come back with more than half of what you have listed.

Ammo you should be good, what you will run into is weight of the box and the lock. Weigh the whole package, that's how they will do it at check in.

I was actually surprised that the Qatar ticket agent in Joberg wanted to weigh my ammo box on my way home here in June. The folks at Airlink on my way to Port Elizabeth asked how much it weighed and I just told them 6 lbs, but they never weighed it.

But I agree on the kitchen scale. And if you don't have one you can get one off of Amazon fairly cheap, then just weigh what you are taking if you are worried. Don't use the bathroom scale since they are usually all over the place when weighing something that light. At least mine is.

The Airline potentially losing accreditation with the IATA is going to ensure that you are not allowed to exceed the agreed limits for Dangerous Goods. (5Kg.)

As mentioned I've only had my ammo weighed once, but Emirates check-in allowed me to remove the ammo from the Pelican case it was in. If I had to weigh the case, which also had tools and a spare scope, I'd have had a problem.

I wouldn't take more than 11lbs, it just isn"t worth the hassle if it causes a problem. I have a couple hundred flights with a checked firearm and I have never once had my ammo weighted, but still wouldn't go over.

They did not give me that option. If they had, could have add another pound of ammo easy. I do believe what you are saying can happen. The problem is with all the new people and people that do not understand the rules. Well it could be a problem. I have only been once, they put my whole ammo box on the scale. I just do not know how understanding some of these people are.

Some check in staff have a problem with anatomy and don’t know their posterior from their elbow.
5kgs of ammunition is the limit. I would however caution that the box containing the ammunition is included In the gross weight.
I have stood there and fumed even with the airline’s info printed out and to hand. Check in staff kicked it up to the supervisor who knowledgeably affirmed that it was 5kg gross. You can’t win sometimes !

If my wife and I were leaving for a 10 day 4 or 5 animal safari with 375H&H and 300WM, we would take 40 cartridges total. With a Pelican 1200 case and a lock, gross weight is easily less than 5 Kg. Truthfully, we could probably cut down to 20 total but having some extra is good for possible sighting in issues or pest/varmint control.

I took 60 rounds of 416. I think I was, at most, like 9lbs all up (case, lock, ammo). They just asked me for an estimate.
