I'm Italian, we used to receive and buy lot of guns from US, I guess that damages both you (for the lack of exportation) and us

Thanks for the heads up. This will catastrophic for the firearms trade in Australia as most firearms, ammunition and accessories are US in origin. I could easily see our biggest importers going bankrupt due to the resultant cash flow problem. I also agree that this is about an anti-gun Administration attacking the industry for the sake of it and nothing to do with geopolitics or crime.

I doubt being a 5 Eyes member will have any effect. 1, the US has never given a flying f**** what happens to their allies providing the US gets what it wants. 2. The halt only effects non-government sales which means our Government won't care (and maybe even be pleased).

This measure is about the US administration causing pain to the firearms industry using one of the few tools it can wield without constitutional complications. Its not the first time they've used export controls. Previously they've threatened US distributors and retailers with prosecution over minor red tape errors with the result that many will not even attempt export sales. I would expect to see more of that, including an increase in US retailers geo-blocking their web sites.

Isn't the form 4457 used to take a rifle out of country to hunt, an export license? Will this impact those planning a safari or any international hunt?

The 4457 is just proof that you own the item that is on the form. We use it for our rifles but it can include anything with a serial number.

It is not a export permit and no one will even ask for it when you leave the US with a rifle.

There was an attempt at a system in early 2015; it was deemed by State Dept any firearm taken out of the country needed an export permit. Including temporary personal use.

I know because I was headed to New Zealand that year in May; so I jumped through the hoops and had to even obtain an EIN from the government just like if I was exporting 155mm howtizers.(Export Indentification Number). No rental was available, either bring a gun or cancel, so I did what I could to make it happen.

Jumped through some more hoops at a US Customs office at a regional airport where it took most of a full day to obtain a designated transaction number that was filed and all the corresponding forms filled out. Customs agent was great, it was just really tedious to do everything and he did his best, basically I spent all day there. I even went and got us lunch so he could wait for a return phone call and not miss it.

About 2 weeks before I left they dropped the whole thing and you didnt need any of that anymore and just a 4457 for return. So all the time and phone calls were all for naught.

Thats why I kinda chuckle when folks say how hard it is to bring your own rifle. Hard? a few airlines you notify before hand and some not at all, you just show up; sometimes you pay a few dollars.

NZ was easy…..now not so easy. Doable yes, but allow 4 months and a bit of mucking around. Things changed drastically about 2 years back.

US is fairly easy but allow a couple of months. When I last did it IIRC the website said allow 12 weeks. I think I got mine in just less than 6 weeks.

Canada is as easy as NZ use to be.

If I can’t take my own rifle then I don’t want to go.

Bloody shit for here....hard enough for the shop I use to get firearms and ammo at the best of times....most of his stuff comes from usa ..including sig and glock handguns...and price of shipping is unbelievable....one of his last ammo shipments, the airline just before it was due to go informed him the shipping fee had doubled....he said to me I have already paid the first invoice and have no choice but pay the updated amount....or it will just sit over there...and that shipping fee was in tens of thousands of usd....firearms and ammunition orders from Europe he said now is near on impossible, due to everything seeming to be ramped up for Ukraine war supplies .....

We use it here to get a visitors permit for the client....its taken as kind of your licence here to show ownership

Thanks @R eight . Just went through the BIS web site and found the relevant documents. If the BIS info is correct, the pause doesn't relate to Country Group A:1 countries ie Wassenaar Participating States> The list (Sup 1, part 740 EAR) of Country Group A:! countries does list Australia. Lets see if that's how it works in practice.

As a US citizen that is younger than you, I whole heartedly agree with you; however I will add that the current administration learned from the failings and backlash of the Clinton era 1994 crime bill….

Meaning the current administration would rather use executive powers to disrupt supply/access to civilian arms rather than due process.

Furthermore the hypocrisy of the USA military arms trade is both mind boggling and shameful.
