First timer plains game hunt

Hello everybody-
I have decided to begin this journey.
I am researching and planning. i know there are a lot of outfitters on this site but i am looking for some folks that can tell me about their plains game safari. i am want to know who you used and why.
i am super nervous about being that far away from anything i know, but thrilled at the same time.
I have emailed with a couple of safari owners/outfitter and feel pretty good about Karoo wild safari.
has anyone been to this place?
i was thinking on doing the dip and pack option and having the taxidermy work done here at home.

Best of luck, tons of outfitters to research, lots of areas to consider, so many different habitats across SA. Have fun in your search, definitely reach out to all the outfitters who sponsor this site, so many members on here have hunted with them so you know they check out. I was nervous the first time I went to Africa as well, just do your research, call hunt references, and talk to the outfitters. I did not hunt with Karoo wild, but I'm sure someone on here has. I would also suggest doing dip and pack if you have a taxidermist your confidant in at home. However, there are many good taxidermists in Africa as well, it comes down to your preference, again the hunters who have hunted with the outfitter you choose would be the best to ask about this. The place I went to near Kimberley last time, I would tell people to get their stuff done back in the states, or wherever they are from.

The planning is truly half the fun!

One thing I can say from personal experience is be ready to start planning that second safari before you are finished with the first. Trust me.

I'd start by reading a lot in the hunt report section if you want to get a good flavor of outfitters. You'll see the titles start with the country so you can filter that way.

Once you have a name you're interested in, such as Karoo Wild, use the search function at the top to look from additional reports and comments.

My first plains game safari was in Namibia and having lived through a what was mostly a nightmare previously on a buffalo and plains game hunt in Tanzania, I was extremely cautious and therefore took my time. I first researched lots of outfitters online and by lots I mean 10-15. After researching their websites and sending basic inquiries via email, I researched online through hunting reports, forums, etc just like you are doing now. For those outfitters that I was interested in, I went to the SCI show so that I could meet the outfitter(s) in person. I am old school in that regard in that I like to look someone in the eyes and ask questions. Prior to the show if there were references listed online or if I saw anything listed on a forum such as this, I reached out to as many of those people and did the exactly same thing you are doing right now. Ultimately for that Namibian hunt we went with Schoenfeld and had a phenomenal time. I just repeated that very process recently and last week at the SCI show booked a SA trip for August/September of this year with Crusader Safaris.

Where and what are you planning on hunting? When I started, I didn't know a blesbok from a springbuck from a reedbuck. I googled the photos and thought "how will that look on the wall" and "What's the trophy fee?". From there I started contacting PHs with my "dream list" and booked with Marius at KMG. It was a wonderful trip BUT BE ADVISED!!!: There's only 2 safaris, your first and your NEXT!!! Going back 2017, this time ti Namibia and again with KMG.

Welcome to the forum. Karoo Wild is in our area, and I have heard nothing but positive reports from them. I am sure that you will have a great time with Victor Watson and the boys over there. I took my brother on his first African hunt with Vic and Lindsay in 2013 and we couldn't have had a better time. We were there for 7 days and hunted four different properties in the area for a huge variety of animals. My brother took all the trophies that he wanted and Vic threw in a couple of cull animals for free. Warning, it did take me about 3 months to lose the weight that I gained on the hunt, ask Lindsay to cook the braised impala shanks, they are fantastic!
