Hey There,
New to the AH forum, life long Hunter. My father was a Hunting Guide in Alaska where I grew up did four Years in The USCG all in Alaska. Spent a lot of time traveling and hunting all over coastal Alaska seen some amazing Bears but nothing that was a Legal opportunity that met my personal Trophy Standards. But I’ve seen some amazing places. Currently I live in Florida and Fly Fish for giant Tarpon right now working on getting my Guide license so I can start taking Clients out on some amazing experiences with what I feel is one of the baddest fish you can catch on a fly.
Today is a big step for me as 6 years ago my father and I were robbed for over 125 firearms while my Dad was working on the North Slope and squatters came in and lived in his house cut into the safes with my dads Welding torches and stole a whole lifetime of firearms collecting. I personally lost about 20 guns and 26k in cash. My father lost much much more. After weeks of intense searching I found the squatters myself and although they were Arrested in my dads stolen pickup. With a bag of Meth and one of the stolen pistols they were only given two weeks in jail and released back into society. Few months later one of the robbers shot and killed a man at a paint store in Anchorage for his car keys and a small amount of cash in the register. All that being said I’ve taken a long break from firearm collecting I’ve only been hunting twice since the robbery and have very little trust and faith in Law and Order especially in Alaska.
The Good news is I’m getting back into the hunting world realizing though I lost so much they didn’t steal my memories or my ability to hunt and that in it self is priceless.

I’m Extremely interested In hunting Africa with a spotlight on open sighted close quarter Buffalo hunting. Can anyone recommend a good book to start learning more about the Black Death? How to judge Their Trophy quality, behavior and an overall good read?

First off, welcome to AH! I’m sorry to hear about the theft and loss of your guns/cash. I cant recommend a book on judging Cape buffalo but there are threads on the site that discuss just that. Also, numerous PHs and experienced hunters on the site that can share information.

Welcome aboard!

@TarponBum welcome from an Alaskan/Cajun. Terrible story to hear. Sorry for your loss. And yes, there is no law enforcement in Alaska, just ticket and report writers. And there never will be as Alaska specifically excluded Sheriffs in the state constitution, our country’s only true law enforcement.

Anyway you are among friends here. As far as books about Cape Buffalo I can recommend “Guide to Nyati the art of hunting the African Cape Buffalo”.

And heh, please share some big Tarpon pics.

:S Welcome:

Welcome to AH! Hopefully someday I can book a tarpon on the fly trip with you. I believe that would indeed be a great experience.

Thanks Everyone for the warm welcome. Tarpon are one hell of a good time. I feel like Tarpon on the Fly is very similar to a spot and stalk style hunt. A wonderful blend of fishing and hunting. And yes @Sourdough law enforcement in Alaska is something special hopefully it changes someday but I don’t see it happening l. It’s a shame because Alaska is such an amazing place.

:S Welcome:

For a book, I will recommend Africa´s most dangerous by Kevin Robertson

Try Safari Press Inc.

Hello TarponBum,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

I am sorry to learn that you and your father have suffered a seriously expensive burglary.
Plus, I am not surprised that the Alaska Court turned the creeps loose right away.
It seems to me that, if every hard working adult in the USA would visit their local courthouse and sit through a criminal trial, this country would soon experience a nationwide revolution.

However, the average person in our once upon a time best country to ever have existed, is content not knowing how truly horrible our legal system has become, in all 50 states.
It is rotten to the core.

Anyway, thanks for joining.
And tarpon ya, that is one of the world’s most incredible game fish for sure.
And, on fly tackle “wow” is the only word I can think of.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

Welcome to AH!

Welcome to AH TarponBum! What a story, thank you for sharing and nice to have you here.

Welcome to the best forum! Enjoy!

Welcome to the site. Craig Boddingtons “Buffalo!” books 1&2 should fill the bill for your Buffalo education. There are dvds as well but I assume hard to find. Good luck planning your trip-Africa is full of wonderful animals and people and I recommend you get there sooner rather than later!

Welcome @TarponBum, and so sorry for the loss of all those firearms. It is sad that these parasites of society can roam freely without any punishment.

I'm sure you are in the FL Keys. I lived in Homestead and fished with a rod or spear fish all over the keys. Isla Morado Hump was a for sure spot if we couldn't find any weed lines on the way to the gulf stream. Yes, please share some pictures of your Tarpons. Again, welcome aboard you are in good hands here.

Welcome to AH! We look forward to you sharing your stories!

WELCOME. WILL NOT HELP YOU JUDGE THEM (YOUR PH JOB) BUT WILL GET YOUR BLOOD BOILING TO HUNT ONE, START WITH PETER CAPSTICKS " DEATH IN THE LONG GRASS" AND CONTIMUE THRU HIS SERIES.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
