George Hoenig

Never shot or owned one but have handled maybe 6 or 8 or so. They are amazing works of mechanical genius. If you have the opportunity to get one, I would. There will be no more made.

I have had the change to know George and spent a bunch of time in his shop where he went over all aspects of that rifle design among other things. The rifle is as unique as he is.

I’ve been intrigued by them for years and owning one is definitely on my bucket list. I was hoping the craftsmanship was as good as everybody serves. Sounds like it is. Now I have to find a good one.

I’m also fascinated by them. According to Champlins, there are around 78 Hoenig round action guns and rifles. I would love to know more about what was made. Anyone here have one? Are there any writings about them to learn more about them?

I found this article and have read it a couple times and each time makes me want one even more. They are beautiful pieces of art in my opinion.

Yes, that's the main article I have seen also. The idea of a little trim, 9.3 is spicy!

Any idea what has been made among the 78?

Champlins has (had?) one in 20 gauge. They were asking $28k and I know these were sold for around $22k...but supply/demand.

The craftsmanship is as good as it gets. He is a perfectionist of the highest order. There were a few .17 HMR versions for sale recently. I saw both when they were in pieces as they were being built.

Anything listed for sale besides at Champlin?

George is a genius. I’ve spent time with him and Owen in the shop and hunting birds.
When you examine the Hoenig Rotary Action you will immediately notice that it is so simple but at the same time it is amazingly clever. They are trim well balanced guns and very usable in either the rifle or shotgun version… or the combination gun. I’d love to have one in .348 WCF.

I’ve personally seen versions of :

.17 HMR
30-40 Krag
9.3 x 74
20 gauge
His virering 20ga x 2 , 7x57R, 22 LR
Combo: 20ga, 9.3
450 Nitro
30-30

They are amazing firearms. I was just thinking something in an old Winchester cartridge would be an absolute blast

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
