Hunted
South Africa
Morning,

I have to admit, I have been coming here for a year or two to learn. But I figured I should make an account to be a little more interactive.
About me:
I live in BC Canada, I hunt a few times a year for: Spring bear, fall bear, fall elk and deer. I have taken a handful of elk and bear, and a few hundred deer. I have hunted in Africa once (my Dad's side of the family lives in SA, so I was visiting family and went out for a few days) taking a nice impala. So while I have been to Africa a few times, I have only hunted the once, and am pretty novice considering actual experience.

To help with hunting I participate in competitive shooting, as part of my work for the Canadian Armed Forces, I have made the CAF international shooting team a few times, and represented us in Bisley England. And I have to say that level of competition really helps prepare you for game.

So I am a good guy to ask about shooting, or deer hunting, but a bad choice for asking about African game.

Side note, where would I post questions about where to find stuff? It is hard to find some gun related stuff in Canada, and I am looking for soft red recoil pads suitable for a 500NE / 450-400. I can only seem to find ones that are branded things like winchester and remington.

Giday Dude and welcome to the A H forums. An excellent source of all things gun related is https://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/
Thanks for the welcome!

I have a few of their red pads, but I found them rather hard. Though they look excellent! I am trying to find ones that are softer and vented that are also red. In my mind the red pads just look more traditional.

Welcome welcome welcome

Hello Dude, welcome to AH. I take it you own a couple of double rifles?

Hello Dude, welcome to AH. I take it you own a couple of double rifles?
Afternoon,
I do not, I like the idea of them, and perhaps one day I will get one (450ne would be my choice) but they are somewhat against the accuracy I crave. I shoot competitively so I am hooked on ultra accurate rifles.
To that end I have a stable of Ruger no.1's. In 7x57, 9.3x74r, 450/400, 500ne (currently away at the shop) and I am always with an eye out for another in classic calibers. I find them very enjoyable rifles, short overall, very accurate (if you do a few minor things), very forgiving to load, and pleasant to handle.... However... they are rather light! And that comes with quite a bit of bite. Hence looking for rather soft red recoil pads. I already converted my 9.3 and 450/400 to red NEG pads, but it did not really soften the blow. Any advice?

Getting gun parts across the border from US into Canada has recently become a pain in the butt. As I read it, gunstocks don't fall into the restrictions. I could be wrong on that (the new US export regs are confusing) but still I think you will find almost all vendors say NO to selling any gun parts whatsoever to Canadians, via internet anyway. They won't take a Canadian credit card (and yes, they know the card is Canadian because they have input billing address). Anyway, something to keep in mind.

I haven't seen a classic red or brown Pachmayer white line x-type recoil pad on the shelf for a long time. Seems everyone wants black accessories these days. We live in a colorless age. I think a 500 Nitro would collapse one of those in short order anyway.

Welcome from another Canadian.

:S Welcome:

Greetings Just a dude in BC,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

Decelerator and Kick-Ease are I believe filled with gel and so, should take a little of the sting away from hard recloilers.
However, I do no know if they are available in red or not.
But I do agree with you that red ones look proper on classic rifles, such as the excellent Ruger #1 model.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

Hello and Welcome, Just a Dude,

I have been told by my gunsmith that Pachmayr has discontinued the Red color in their D752B Olde English recoil pad. I have these on a few of my rifles, they look "proper" and they do help reduce the sting.

Lyman (owner of Pachmyr brand) website lists them as in stock for a 1" medium Red D752B.

I am not sure at all about shipment to Canada. Perhaps a phone call to Lyman directly?

If this is not an option, I can suggest staying with the NECG red pads (which my gunsmith recommends, probably because grinding, installation is easier), and using a Limbsaver shoulder pad, that is thinner than a PAST shoulder pad, and I think works better. No big deal with an extra 1/4 inch or so LOP, and really takes the sting out of shooting a 450/400 Nitro 3inch with just a thin shirt.

You should be wary of too soft a recoil pad on that cannon. In the old days, a red "White Line" x-type recoil pad was not just top of the line, those were about all there was to be had. I have seen many old shotguns, including my dad's, that had collapsed x's. I'm not sure you could shoot a 500 Nitro as many times as Dad did his shotgun ... without robbing a bank or marrying an orthopedic surgeon. Nevertheless, if the recoil pad on that monster is not firm enough, you can expect your middle finger will likely take some abuse from the back of the trigger guard. It's one reason I dropped Limbsaver slipon from my twelve gauge magnum A-5. The other being Limbsaver slipon is so soft it won't stay put on the stock. I have had better luck with Pachmayer's Decelerator but of course they are, I believe, only offered in black (maybe brown?)

Welcome to the forum officially!! I’m no good at answering questions about guns and ammo but I’m sure you will find the answers that you need here. All the best. Sue tidwell

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
