Hi Everyone...I just joined this forum and really enjoy the discussions about the different calibers used and advice on which calibers to use.
My two favorite calibers are the .270 Winchester and the 9.3 x 62mm Mauser. These are the two calibers I used in Africa in year September, 2003. I was on two hunts on this one trip to Africa. The two countries were Zimbabwe and South Africa near Port Elizabeth. I was able to take animals from the Dik Dik up to Eland and Kudu with the .270 Winchester. The only animal I messed up on was a big Water Buk....I shot him a wee bit too low...a 2nd shot took care of this problem. All other .270 shots were decisive and no problems. I've used the .270 for sixty years and have killed game from the top of the world(Yukon) to the bottom of the world(Africa) and the ,270 has never failed me. However, for big and dangerous animals I will use the 9.3 x 62 Mauser.
The 9.3 x 62 Mauser was my favorite as it killed four cape buffalo with one shot each. I have read that no one has ever been able to notice that the .375 H&H has shown any superiority over the 9.3. With 66 grains of Big Game powder I am getting 2500 fps +/-. Three other hunters took their buffalo with my 9.3. One shot for each for all four of us using my 9.3 x 62 Mauser.
I look forward to reading all of the questions and comments here. I am a US citizen and live in the south eastern State of Tennessee. I am now 70 years old and will probably not be able to come back to beautiful Africa. I can't afford it anymore. However, I've noticed that I can afford things if I am motivated enough.
Best wishes to all
