So I have been yearning for a new rifle for plainsgame, something light something useful something different....

Looked at Drillings but not gonna work for me...

I am now down to the Krieghoff Ultra.

Calibers have to be rimmed.

So do I go for same caliber barrels or mixed....

1st set:

A 9.3x74R/9.3×74R
Or
B 9.3x74R/7×57R

2nd set:

A 7x65R/7x65R
Or
B 7x65R/6.5x57R

3rd set:
C 20ga/22Hornet
Or
B 20ga/6.5×57R
Or
A 20ga/7×57R

The combination set is for my further quest of the tiny ten but will include longer shots at.some of them. Bear in mide I love to call in duikers etc. But have had leopard, hyena, jackal and bushpig come un while calling so the Hornet may be a bit small......but it is a classic

I am currently leaning towards the ones marked A. All barrels are 24 inches with qd scope mounts except when mixing rifle calibers barrel length drops to 22 inches.

What say you?

I used a Heym 9.3x74R double last year for impala, warthog, baboon and leopard. Overall about 10 animals at ranges from 50 to 200 yards. It worked perfectly for all the bait I shot and as well as the leopard (1 shot kill, dead at the bottom of tree).

A-A-C is my vote. ( 2x 9.3, 2x7.65, 20/.22)

Mixing rifle calibers just seems like a headache in the making.

9.3x74r barrels....covered for surprises...and for small stuff use solids....or 3 sets one 9.3x74r ..then 7x65r and final set .22 hornet.... :A Banana: :A Thumbs Up:
But I need a shottie for blue duiker, sand grouse, green pigeons etc.

I'd go 9.3x74R/7x65R or 30R Blaser + 20G/20G or 20G/22Hornet.

Load up the 9.3 with 285gr heavy, shorter range pill and 7 or 7.62mm with 165-170gr for longer range capability. For plains game you can back up the 9.3 shot with a 7mm should the need be as both are capable enough for it but combo like this gives you more versatility than just a single calibre rifle.

I have had a few combo guns and dreilings. I still have a Kreighoff dreiling (that I am contemplating selling) in 16x16 over 7x57R. It is a novel concept having a choice of rifle caliber and/or shotgun but I have not found them to be as useful as I imagined. It is OK for many situations but not really good for any. Mostly, I have used them on pig and turkey.

However, I think my Merkel 141E 9,3x74R is the perfect rifle for taking on most anything. It is light, handy, powerful and plenty accurate out to 200-250 yards if needed.

Last night I went out to ambush some pigs off a bait site. With the Kreighoff and the Merkel in the truck, I grabbed the Merkel when it was time to slip down the trail.

Safe shooting

Bbf 97 , .22 Hornet 7x57R Bergstutzen could be one, same scope, zero both barrels for same poi .

Then another set of doubles

And then ordinary combo set

I know you said drilling wouldn’t work for you but I’d suggest you give Blaser BD14 a look. It is a surprisingly lightweight and well handling gun. I need another rifle like I need a hole in my head but after handling one in a store I’m very tempted to buy one. I’d go 5.6x50R/30RBlaser/20G

1st set A
2nd set A
3 set C - When calling, slip a 20ga slug in that barrel. Should be more than adequate for the unexpected responders

I waited awhile, but found a 375 H&H in a double. I think their worth the weight and ammo everywhere.

9.3x74 / 20 Ga
No need to lead up the 20 with slugs. Softs and solids available as needed.

Edit to add: Being sure that a rimmed 9.3x74 dropped into the 20 ga barrel cannot cause an obstruction. (A full choke s/b ~.585" inside diameter.)

Had a brain fart again about this one.
The 20ga/whatever combi barrel will cost me R47000 more.....I can buy 9 Brno Sidelock sxs shotguns here for that price.....so that set of barrels are off the cards....besides 20ga is not worth much here 12ga is the best. I then have a proper shotgun to use for birds as well. The Greener I have is going to go.

I hunt at max 200 meters therefore the 9.3x74R/7×57mm Bergstutsen set should do me fine.

When calling duikers I can sit with the Bergstutsen and sxs shotgun as this is done from a blind.

As for the magazine/cartidge holder built into the stock, are they any good and are they worth it? How many rounds do they hold? Cant find much on them on the internet

I have a Chapuis 9.3x74R double rifle. It is an absolutely excellent out-of-the-box double rifle, and I recommend it wholeheartedly. In terms of what it delivers for what it costs, it has proved a better rifle than more expensive rifles that I own (which include a Holland & Holland in .375).

Pierre van der Walt in the bible ('African Dangerous Game Cartridges') says this is the one to go for - the same model of rifle in heavier calibres is unbalanced. I strongly recommend that you start here.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
