Folks I am keen to either buy a .470 NE or .500 NE, 90% sure I have a preference for the .500 NE.

Anyway looking at the options list, engraving/timber etc. all pretty well personal choice depending on budget, the one I am confused about is the having the ability to mount a scope, the option above is circa $2800 AUD. Is it a worthwhile option, even if you don't intend it make use of it initially, my thinking it is always there and you might have an occasion down the track where you wish you had of, but on a .470 or .500 does it even make sense ? it is an expensive option. Obviously on a smaller cal it is possibly a no brainer.

Also does it "ruin" the aesthetics of a .500 ?

Initially I intend to just run my RMR due to my eyes.

I ran an RMR on my Heym 500NE as well as an AHR 505 Gibbs. A 1 MOA RMR beats iron sights any day of the week. The little notches Heym put on the rib for the QD RMR mount were almost invisible when the optic was off the gun.

A scope on a 470 or 500 is a bit much... Don't think I would do that.

Thanks Matt. Given its going to be either of those two calibers, I think I agree, scope will never be needed on a .500 etc. therefore not worth spending the $2800 AUD on that upgrade

cheers

If your struggling to decide on a 470 or 500, look at reloading components. Which ever one is easier to find components for will be a fine choice. Both cartridges are proven dangerous game stoppers.

Thanks Matt, Bruce Bertram is only a couple hours drive from me so I should be able to grab either of him….leaning towards the .500 on the gross box frame which will put the rifle weight at 11.8 pounds think….maybe .8 pounds heavier than I’d like but the gross box will make for a sturdy rifle and will also get the second shot back on target maybe slightly quicker I figure.

I will choose either H2 Aimpoint or RMR Inlike the Aimpoint for top battery loading..but not as sleek as the RMR.

Iron sights or miniature red dot. The factory red dot mount sets way to high. Go with the Henneberger.

The Henneberger base is about $150.00. It is non QD.

I used a 1 MOA RMR and I liked it very much!

11-12 pounds is fine for a 500, that's what both of mine weighed.

given i have owned two 500 NEs and now three 470s i will share my experience:
1. i would never put any type of traditional tube scope on these two calibers…never
2. you should never buy any DR in these calibers you cannot have milled to accept a red dot scope

experience is speaking to you

Ditto on the RMR. I have RMRs on both my 450 and 470 Heym's.

With respect to a scope, you may very well run into regulation issues between the bare rifle and/or the rifle when the scope is installed.

Thank you RB you guys have saved me $2800 !!
