hi whippet welcome aboard. sight hound..... ok whats this aussie for then? ;)

Dogs that hunt by sight ie: greyhounds, whippets, deerhounds, staghounds and their crosses. We use them for hunting fast game like rabbits, hares, feral cats and foxes. Normally the game is flushed from cover/dens/trees by beaters/terriers and-or hounds to waiting sight hounds that catch and kill.

Or you can just walk cover with your dogs with the wind in your face letting the dogs loose to hunt as you walk with them.

Hi Whippet, not any legal coursing in SA. Most hunting with sight hounds is associated with gambling and illegal hunting. In general the practice is a biodiversity nightmare because the hounds cannot be proofed off certain game, especially sensitive species like Oribi. In general it is a problem for landowners and conservationists because the illegal hunters just show up on a farm without permission or notification and intimidate the landowner and Police alike. There are however some responsible sight hound breeders and hunters that pursue problem animals like jackal in a very controlled manner. Beautiful to experience. For the scent hound hunters the illegal hunting causes a problematic opinion cross over and we often get thrown into the same pot by the uninformed. Legislation is only really relevant to coursing but a few provinces are working at adopting more specific laws and even considering making allowance for coursing and racing to tackle the illegal hunting plague. Many farmers have found themselves on the wrong side of the law after shooting hounds and 1 case in Grahamstown resulted in the farmer having to pay R300000 damages plus legal costs. This was after he killed 4 hounds.

Welcome to AH whippet! Very interesting sport you have there never heard of that before you'll have to post a video so we can see how it works.

Whippet, Welcome to AH.

Welcome to AH.

What do you run in Aus? You have enough space and vermin it should be a paradise.

It's always the out of control dogs that spoil it for the rest. Does not matter where you are.

Thanks guys
I have training collars for my dogs to proof them from chasing stock ie sheep, cattle etc. They know what they can and can't hunt. No issues there. Will post pics asap

Welcome to AH Whippet.

Sighthounds are very popular in Spain, we use greyhounds to hunt hares. Some hunters follow on horseback.

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
