Hi guy's , anyone know if I need an import permit for hippo? I know I need one to export out of Africa.

I would also check with them on what hippos can be brought home. If it is a problem animal which some hippos hunted at night are I do believe they can not be imported. They are cheaper to hunt and some guys fudge the paperwork to make them look legal but I know they have been cracking down on that a bunch from what pieter has told me. Pieter had told me they have fewer permits because of some of bs guys are pulling with paperwork.

I am sure marius can tell you what paperwork you will need if you don't here back from ssi shortly.

Hippopotamus tusks

Do I need a permit to import hippopotamus ivory? The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibious) is listed in CITES Appendix II. Click here for a CITES fact sheet.

  • The United States recognizes the CITES personal effects exemption. You do not need a CITES permit to import hippopotamus ivory when the item is part of accompanying baggage, is for your personal use, and the exporting country does not require you to have a permit. You must declare the tusk on the Customs form at the time of import.
  • Not all CITES countries recognize the personal effects exemption, and may require a CITES permit. Contact the foreign country to meets its requirements.
  • If the ivory item is being mailed or shipped separately, it must be accompanied by a CITES permit.
  • Click here for information if you are commercially importing or exporting hippopotamus tusks or if you are separately shipping personal items through the mail or as cargo.
  • A person engaged in business as an importer or exporter of wildlife must obtain an import/export license, and shipments of hippopotamus items must be accompanied by CITES permits.

Charlie, did you get a CITIES permit for your upcoming Hippo hunt?

Thanks Wayne, I just checked with my taxidermist he also said as far as he knows you do not need one. Marius said the hippos we are hunting are fully exportable.

Hoping to hear from safaris specialty importers on this.

@BRICKBURN, your powers are astonishing sometimes. Truly a master of the Google machine

Royal may know since he brought one home. His was zim though but came through SA I do believe.

Charlie has not hunted his desired species yet, so there is nothing to import or export.

You do not need a CITES permit to HUNT.

You need a CITES permit to IMPORT/EXPORT any of the particular species that are in some of the Appendices.
CITES APPENDIX I - require an import permit to the final destination country and then an EXPORT permit will be issued.

CITES APPENDIX II - require an export permit from the country of origin.

I got a short message yesterday from Rosella that Robert is in the hospital.... some patience is in order.

Perhaps some prayers and well wishes, however I'm not sure what the issues are as I have not re-connected either.

Prayers for Robert!

I don't recall that a CITES permit was required for the hippo, just the normal.vet stuff for import to SA. But as it is country of origin that's important I'm a bad comparison as I hunted mine in Zim.

The Hippo is CITES 2 and only needs an export permit from country of origin. No import permit needed.

Yes Bob I know. I happened to call Rosella the morning he was rushed to the hospital it had apparently just happened. Prayers for sure everyone.

Oh, I assumed you didn't know since you said you hadn't been able to get in touch with them?
