Hippopotamus Taxidermy Pictures

With just 80+ days only remaining until my 2014 Hippo hunt, I still have not found a suitable idea of what to do with my hippo, I obviously do not have room for a full mount, LOL....nor half or even a head mount!! I like the idea of the ivories on a plaque, or maybe just to lay the cleaned full skull on the ground in my trophy room...I have seen mounted feet as stools etc, but that doesn't interest me a lot. Hence my question...
what have previous hippo hunters done?? what can be done with the hide/skin?? Any pictures I can consider??
Same question for a crocodile....
any ideas would be appreciated greatly!

I have seen flat skins of the crocodile, it's still enormous though. The hippo would be a nice skull mount, but the shipping and expense to get it home to me justifies a nice picture on the wall of you and the hippo and maybe the team of people that were involved in the hunt.

1st as an actual skin mount emerging from the water. 2nd is a replica floating in the water. just a couple ideas.

The croc mount could be made smaller by using a smaller water scene base and instead of curling the tail up, simply allowing it to lay out on the floor. Using a Baboon or duiker would shorten it up a bit as well.

I saw one like this at DSC. This is my plan someday. Wife is even okay with the idea as long as it is in the trophy room.

there are some interesting ideas there....I have floor space, so a floor display of a hippo could work...I found a half mount floor display of a croc coming out of the water too.
It just seems a tragedy not to use more of a hippo than just its tusks to me...can anything be made from its skin?? I don't see much about hippo skin being made into anything...maybe its difficult to tan or deal with??

I know that Russell Moccasin does some work in hippo shoes/boots.... I've been meaning to e-mail them and see what they recommend. I can't afford a hippo mount, but would love to have something done with the hide too. Not sure what else you could do. Perhaps a panel to frame and hang on the wall? It might look pretty cool if it had some scars from a fight?

i have a pair of courtney boots in hippo hide, but not sure if they make them anymore or maybe dont export them . the hippo culling outfit in the luangwa used to export the hides to japan, but i dont know what they made from them.

A friend of mine has a larger version of the table, the size of a coffee table, it looks really cool !

He has the ivories in a plaque and replicas in the skull.

He is, but also very rich, his trophy room is actually like a large warehouse where most of his trophies are displayed in dioramas.

That sounds amazing.... When I was a small child my parents had a friend that had hunted in Africa extensively in the 50s. We used to go over to the widow's house when we would visit my grandmother. In my memory that trophy room was as big as a football field!!! I can still remember walking into the room and looking up to see the Elephant head over the door.... That trophy room was what really what got me truly interested in Africa. funny, but I can still stare at taxidermy for hours.

I will probably never have a room like you describe, or like my mother's friend, but I can't wait to really start mine in August!

Unfortunately that is not my case either, I just have euro-mounts scattered all over my apartment.

I came up with some different ideas of ''what to do with my hippo''....

HIPPOPOTAMUS STEW

1 med. sized hippo
1 ton salt
Pepper to taste
500 bushels potatoes
1000 gals. brown gravy
200 bushels carrots
400 sprigs parsley
2 sm. rabbits (optional)


Cut hippo meat into bite sized pieces. This will take about 2 months. Cut vegetables into cubes (another 2 months). Place meat into large pan and cover with gravy. Simmer for 4 weeks. Shovel in salt and pepper to taste. When meat is tender, add vegetables. A steam shovel is useful for this. Simmer slowly for 4 more weeks. Garnish with parsley.
Will serve 2, 700 people. If more are expected, add 2 small rabbits - this is not recommended as very few people like hare in their stew.
