What are you going to hunt ??

Large game such as eland and kudu - 6 power great.
The higher the power setting the more restricted your field of view.
The PH is very unlikely to let you shoot a moving target especially so when your target is near a herd for example so the 6 power should be fine as you are unlikely to be shooting at targets on the horizon.
I might add that once the power setting is high you may find the heat waves make it very difficult to focus and concentrate.

Eland ,Kudo, zebra ,impala . I had a straight 6x on a post 64 Winchester M70 in 300Weatherdy mag yeats a go for elk a white tails .Even took a whitetail at 60 yrs in a Kentucky hardwood forest with no complications. The only time I wished for more magnification was when I was shooting groups ,developing loads . That a good point about the heat waves and mirage .

yup thought it was a good scope. havent used it for a long time but only because i dont use that rifle as its a bit on the heavy side being more of a long range rifle. never noticed heat waves etc and was using it in the selous in oct/nov many years ago so it was hot.

Thanks , good to know , I am anquishly looking forward to is ariavel.meenwhile I am shooting it with a new Lyman receiver appiture that I traded out the elivation screw/knodd assembly with a vintage assemble because they changed the knodd to a round head with a screw slot and I found a assortment of part available on eBay .any how she is a good shooter .

Welcome to AH!

Welcome to AH sir. 6 power should be fine on all of the animals that you have listed. Aim small miss small.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

No problem with a straight 6x if you like it.

Welcome Rem1903a3. I like your moniker. I own several of them and some Springfield o3(s ) as well. I had an 03 - A3 sporterized and converted to a 35 Whelen which I took to Africa last August. The S & B 6X is a good scope no doubt. However, for hunting in the bush it is IMHO a bit much. I think you would be better served by a good 4X or a low powered variable. Out of curiosity is your Mod 70 a controlled feed? If so I envy you. I recently acquired a 308 Norma Mag with a Mauser (or at least a Mauser styled) action.

What CMP discipline do you shoot? What do you hunt in the States? Do you already have a PG hunt booked or is it still in the planning stages?

Welcome, Gotta say great caliber that 300 H&H will do well on African plains game

the only time the 6x is going to be a problem is at distances under 30 yards.

For what it's worth, my last safari I used a Leupold FX3 6x42 on my Merkel K1 in 7 RM. You will be fine. :)

Rem1903a3, did you forget to add your reply to the questions I asked?

I am pre planning stages ,LOL ,one might say .I shoot my Remington 1903a3 in the Springfield match at the nationals ,I have earned bronze and silvers .No gold yet . I also have shot the Presidents 100, And the National Individual Trophy.I use a National Match AR in those . I have not competed much in the last three years do to a kidney affliction and the side affects of the steroids. I am on the mend and working out equipment.the M70 is a1949 sporting a Griffin & Howe side mount assemble and I have added a new Lyman appiture rear sight that I shopped out the elivation nobb and screw assemble with a older model that is easily adjusted by fingers .(no screw driver required) I hunt deer and Elk in the states

And thanks everyone for the advise and reassurance on the 6 power , I am really liking the cartridge ,I have wanted a pre 64 M 70 for a long time .

I shoot at Camp Perry as well, only I'm primarily a pistol shooter. I earned my "Distinguished Pistol Badge" back in 1993. Like you I've wanted to get my hands on a pre 64 Mod. 70 for about as long as I can remember. Fortunately, there are now two of them corralled. One that was made in 1936 originally a 30-06 but since rebored to 300 Weatherby Mag and 1948 model in 30-06.

Rest assured that if you continue in this forum that you will go from the pre planning to the planning stage and from there to Africa. I'm 73 and now wondering why it took me so long to bite the bullet and go hunt Africa? I took both of my sons on a PG Safari last August. Now we are pre-planning our return trip. Guaranteed, hunting Africa is like nothing you've ever experienced.
