Seeking input from anyone with prior experience hunting chamois in the Pyrenees. I'm headed to Barcelona and the Pyrenees this coming October to hunt chamois with Bruno Rosich of Trophy Hunting Spain. What was your experience like hunting in the Pyrenees and physical conditioning recommendations for the hunt? I plan to hike a lot here in Montana this summer to get ready so altitude is no big issue, just need to strengthen my legs! Appreciate any feedback you care to share as I get ready. Also any touring suggestions in Spain. My wife and I are going to Spain in a couple of weeks to hunt Roe Deer with Bruno's brother Francisco Rosich so we are doing some touring around the Barcelona region following that hunt but this fall would like to maybe tour over around Madrid if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

Pat

Pyrenees chamois is among the toughest hunt in Spain. If you get lucky youll get it on the first day, but 100% recommended to be in shape to enjoy the hunt and potentially having to go up the mountain a second time!
I hunted several of those (around 15-20) in the Pyrenees.
Beautiful scenery and Bruno is an experienced outfitter.
Post photos!!

I have no experience with the Pyrenees. I went for Alpine Chamois in Slovenia. I have been hiking all over the Swiss, German and Austrian Alps and thought I was prepared for the "Little Switzerland" mountains. That said, I was not expecting the hunt to be as tuff as it was. I was under equipped in boots, trekking poles and water. Practice hiking in moraines, land slides, and steeps without switchbacks. I took hiking boot, but need mountaineering boots.

I did see a World of Sports Afield show where the hunters took a ski lift up to the top and then worked there way down the mountain in the Pyrenees. That looked like a much easier hunt then the one I took. If that your case, it should be fairly easy except of the altitude .

So I hunted the “Big 5” of the Pyrenees with Dani Loughlin- one of Bruno’s fantastic guides this past October (chamois, red deer, mouflon, fallow deer and roe buck). The fallow was a mercy kill as he had a broken back foot but was fully mature…I was with Bruno a lil over 2 weeks ago hunting Gredos ibex in the Gredos mountains- it was extremely tough hunting conditions as it was snowing in the morning and then freezing rain and then full on rain in the afternoon. We hiked over 8 miles (not including elevation changes and very slippery conditions) but was able to seal the deal on a great ibex!

As far as the Pyrenees- be prepared to do some steep inclines- I would take hiking poles if were you (they have extras in case you forget tho). Dani and the park ranger asked if my fiance and I wanted to hunt chamois using the “scenic” route vs easier route. We chose the scenic route as we are in fairly good shape (she more than me as she’s a yoga instructor and short/low to the ground)! Boy were we glad we chose that route as the views were spectacular!!! Also- wear good socks and well broken in boots. I trained with a 20lb weight vest on incline treadmill and was glad I did as we’re from Missouri where it’s fairly flat. So if you’re in decent shape and sounds like you are- go the scenic route as we were able to see the top of Monserrat from where we were hunting (which I’m sure you’ll be hunting as well).

Don’t hesitate to DM for further questions as I help represent Bruno here in the US (I’m a booking agent for JS Worldwide Hunting LLC).

Never hunted the Pyrennees, but did some mountain climbing there when I was much, much younger :ROFLMAO:

It could be very hard, but depends where you are going, so be sure to take it up with your guide, he will find the appropiate route for you.

You will be hunting in awesome and beautiful country, any trophy will be hard earned and the saying, “No Pain - No Gain” reigns supreme in those mountains. I’m excited and envious of your upcoming Spanish adventure in the Pyrenees, this hunt has been on my bucket list for decades.
I have traveled Spain many times in my life, attended summer school in Salamanca in 1990, toured by bus and high speed rail most of the country. Barcelona is my favorite destination, I could live there. I’d recommend visiting places like Segovia, Seville, Madrid, Salamanca & Santiago de Compostela. The Spanish people are one of the most friendly, humble and proud to share their rich culture of food with family style hospitality. There are many amazing museums, medieval castles, ancient walled cities & aqueducts to explore. If one does their research, a well orchestrated Spanish adventure is to be had.
I’ll be visiting Barcelona again with my wife in October as well.

Good luck with your trip!
