Hunting Outfitter in WYOMING

Hello EVERYONE! I have just a couple points in Wyoming for 3 different species, looking at booking a hunt in 2023 or 2024.
Wyoming points now. I currently have 2 Antelope, 1 Deer, and 3 Elk Preference Points. Looking at Elk or elk and another one. I'm In Indiana, so I want to make the trip worth it.

Does anyone have recommendations for an outfitter in the mountains in Wyoming? I went a hour NW of Casper before, for Mule deer, shot a decent buck. It was mainly sage and a few trees. Looking for more of a Forest, Mountain hunt. I find it so hard to just start looking and finding a decent outfitter. Also, my last outfitter was kind of lazy, I had a young guide, and they just wanted to drive in the 4X4 most of the time. I would rather do some walking.

I hunted with table mountain outfitters a good many years ago and had a great experience. I did mule deer and antelope in the southern part of the state, but think they operate in other areas as well. Good luck!

there are many good outfits here in Wyoming. A lot depends on how much you want to spend, and where you want to go.

I think you will need more points first. 3 elk points won't even get you a general bull tag. Are you asking l willing to burn points on a cow hunt? In many areas, the elk season won't overlap with deer, and usually terrain of antelope won't overlap much with elk. I would recommend just focusing on elk if that's what you want.

Regardless, I would first check the draw odds to see what you can even draw with those points. That will cut down your options very quickly.

I think it will take 4 to draw general elk. I got a nice elk with Triple 3 in 2022. I would reach out to them since they have some general unit hunts.

I've hunted with SNS Outfitters three times. Hunted with them in the Bighorns for elk and mule deer and around Casper for antelope. They are top notch and I highly recommended them.

I’ve had great experiences (4) with Table Mountain. As stated they have operations out of Cheyenne and directly north in Wheatland - where I shot an Elk. Stunning country.

I hunted with Triangle X out of Teton Valley. They have been hunting since purchasing their ranch in the 1920's. It's a bit of a ride to get into camp near Two Oceans Pass and the Pacific Creek but well worth it. I hunted 1 on 1.

The other one my brother, he was the local USFWS Field Agent for the area, recommended hunting with is Yellowstone Outfitters. They hunt the Thoroughfare. Another long ride in but truly wilderness hunting. They were booked two years out when I decided to go in 2012. Their camp at Hawks Rest is near the Thoroughfare which Teddy Roosevelt spoke highly of. It's also 30 miles in any direction to a dirt road.

Another long ride in but truly wilderness hunting. They were booked two years out when I decided to go in 2012. Their camp at Hawks Rest is near the Thoroughfare which Teddy Roosevelt spoke highly of. It's also 30 miles in any direction to a dirt road.

I guided for Yellowstone Outfitters for quite a few years. I highly recommend them, but I’m a little biased.

The TX (Triangle X) is also a good outfit. They own the largest number of camps in the Teton Wilderness of any other outfits, and recently purchased one of my favorite camps in the wilderness.

You might want to get a subscription to “hunters trailhead” or similar which will show you roughly how many points you need for each species and unit. You are afew years out for most of what you want to do.

I did the same hunt with Table Mountain back in 2013, great experience lots of animals, hunted deer and pronghorn. Took a 24” 4x4 mule deer but I should have been more selective on the pronghorn. Actually it was my fault I shot the wrong buck out of a heard of about 20 bucks, he was still a decent buck and I’m glad to have him. I also saw some big elk on the same ranch.

Wyoming is getting ready to change up their preference point system and the non-resident hunters who have been buying points are getting the short end of the deal. I have 21 moose and sheep points and still just a little short to draw.

I have done two antelope hunts with SNS Outfitters and they were top notch hunts. However, I am not sure I'd book another hunt with them. For my last hunt, I booked it in Sept 2021 for a Sept 2022 hunt. Three months after booking the hunt and paying the deposit, I received a letter telling me the price was being increased by $100 due to inflation. That didn't set too well with me.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, but I wouldnt book a hunt with SNS because it is owned by Sy who was on the Wyoming Task Force and pushed the 90/10 bill and making it so many non residents will never draw a sheep or moose tag. I know the Task Force also pushed for the price increase on special licences as well. I'm sure he is really good and provides an amazing service but given he advocated for changing the rules on non residents, I dont feel comfortable supporting him.

The moose/sheep points changes have already gone into effect. There's a lot more on the table that may change soon too. Price increases, at least for the NR special license, and potentially changing the NR general tag to a regional tag like the current NR deer. In my view, point creep is going to be really bad in the next couple years. As a resident of WY, it has really made it difficult for me to put together an elk hunt with two of my NR brothers. I can't even, in good conscience, tell them to keep buying points because I'm not sure they'll be able to catch up.

I agree with you about Sy, but in truth most residents will never be able to draw a sheep or moose tag. That's why the changes occurred. In the current system, there's no point in my sons buying points because they'll never draw. With the system they're transitioning to (bonus point system), at least you have a better chance every year.

I will be making my second trip to Hawks Rest on the Thorofare w Yellowstone in Sept 2027

Their most popular hunt, bugling elk w Rifle in Sept is booked out till at least 2028. I booked Sept 2027 last January They are that good. Unit 60 General License 3-4 points depending on Regular or Special. Literally the greatest adventure of an elk hunt you can get in America.

They have other hunts besides their Sept hunt that are only booked out 1 or 2 years. The rifle bugling elk hunt in Sept at Hawks Rest is a adventure of a lifetime

I know there are other outfitters that do hunts in the wilderness near Yellowstone Park that are very good but I can only speak from personal experience about Yellowstone Outfitters

I see that you’re in Indiana. The SCI convention is in Nashville and I’d expect there will be more than a few Wyoming outfitters there. May be worth the drive.

Here's a couple photos to wet your appetite. I suspect that @CM McKenzie and @TERMINATOR have similar photos from hunting the Thoroughfare. I shot my elk a 1 1/2 hour ride up and over steep ridges from camp. It took Harold Turner 2 1/2 hours to get to us with the pack mules. And it took us 3 1/2 hours to get back to camp with the mules loaded.
