Hunting Safari In Namibia
by J. Frankenburger

Halloween found us boarding a flight for Africa. I was really pumped as I had waited over 30 years for this. After a brutally long day filled with airport delays we arrived at Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris after midnight on Nov 1. I managed to get a few hours sleep and was ready to go at 7 AM. Our PH, Andries Smit, was excellent. He asked questions and explained things ahead of time so there weren't any surprises and he knew what our preferences and goals were. We hunted for 8 days on their 75000 acres and saw tremendous numbers of game and some magnificent trophies. The accommodations were exceptional, the staff was great and the food outstanding. I was fortunate to get 5 great trophies, Gemsbok, Blue Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Impala, and Kudu. The Kudu scored bronze and the other four scored gold... way above my expectations and the PH informed me that the Blue Wildebeest made the Namibia book. My hunting partner took four trophies, Gemsbok, Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, and Impala. His Wildebeest scored Gold and the others scored silver. Our wives were escorted on daily photo safaris, shopping trips, and excursions to Etosha and the Cheetah Conservation Fund. They took 1500 pictures each and some of the trophies they shot were bigger than ours! Being our first trip over we have nothing to compare it with but none of us can imagine anything better. The experience was far better than expected... and we expected a lot!

We used the spot and stalk method and my rifle was a 300 Winchester Magnum and my partner used a 338 Magnum. Neither of us felt over gunned and in reflection I think the 338 is the better choice. My longest shot was just under 200 yards and the shortest was about 90. His were much longer, 280, 251, 230 and 130. I know you want pictures so will try to post pictures of mine.

If anyone is looking for a place to go in Namibia I highly recommend you consider Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
