Hurricane Harvey and me

Our house didn't suffer any flooding, but by Monday night during Harvey, the water was about a foot higher than it was in this picture. That's my across-the-street neighbor's house in the background. Steep Bank Creek, about 100 yards from our house, and maybe 25-30 deep, was overflowing by this time because the Brazos River which it empties into was also full and getting close to the top of the levees.

Still not sure of total rainfall for our area, but between one of my neighbors and me, we figure 40" in 4 days, or maybe just a bit more.

Glad to hear you didn't have water in your house. I can't imagine dealing with that. I lived in northeast Houston (Kingwood) for 3 years and my old house stayed dry too. Some good friends in another part of Kingwood had 5 feet of water in their house.

Sugar Land is in good shape. As much rain as we got, and it was obviously a lot, there weren't that many houses that were damaged, at least not like other parts of Houston.

Glad you came out well! I made a donation to the Red Cross for you guys. They did a good job helping here in Colorado when we had our "100 year flood". Hope they're helping there?

The gun range where I ordinarily practice is still under water, it'll probably open back up in another month or so. Most of Houston is dried out now, things are moving along. There are still lots of people rebuilding, though.

My office window faces north and looks out over the Addicks Reservoir (I am literally 300 feet from the dam as I sit in my office).

There is still quite a lot of water held in the reservoir, despite them letting a lot out over the past two weeks. It still looks like a lake in there!

How long do you reckon before ASC is open? Since we never lost electricity during the storm, I took advantage of having nothing better to do (and definitely nowhere to go) and spent a lot of time on the reloading bench.

I have not laid eyes on the general area that is ASC in quite some time, probably 3 years. Your guess would be better than mine, I'm sure!

But if ASC was in Addicks (vs Barker) it would be weeks yet, I think. The ASC website does mention they hope to resume corporate events on October 15th.

Maybe they are draining Barker faster than Addicks due to the commercial nature of Barker vs Addicks?

I'm about 15 miles south of there. I was up there shooting either 1 or 2 weekends before Harvey hit. I need to join the club over by Pecan Grove, but they only accept new applications in March of each year. It's a total roll of the dice to be one of the first applications they get. Other than that, there aren't any rifle ranges anywhere near me. I have family land in Louisiana, but that's almost 6 hours away.

They generally open up once a year in the late summer early fall timeframe.

Depending on the renewal rate, some years there are not a lot of openings.

If you are still interested next year, remind me around July to write the membership director an email to nominate you. That is now the only way to get in...an existing member must sponsor you.
