G'day All,

I have finally made the move to Oz and will be shipping my goods over in the not too distant future. Does anyone know if I will be allowed / have hassles importing the following into Australia:

  1. Coffee table made from elephant ear and foot.
  2. Spear made from ivory/bone (not sure) and hardwood.
Both of these Items are at least 50/60 years old if not more. I have no way of ascertaining age or provenance. They have simply been "in the family".

Thanks
Gary

No elephant products can be imported into Oz unfortunately.

:S Welcome: Welcome to our shores

Even is the furniture isn’t :E Shrug:

In Australia, the importation of elephant products is regulated by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. A summary of the situation is on their website https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environme...no-products-from-another-country-to-australia

On my reading of it, your OK if dates prior to 1975. Would suggest contacting the Department for clarification. Do you have old photos etc showing it with the family back in the day etc? There might even be ways to get an assessor to certify the age of items. Again I'd suggest contacting the Department or a professional experienced in this type of issue.

Haven't a clue...but from what I have read about over there, I doubt you have any chance at all of getting them in.....and bit of side track why move there?
Because it’s great over here, no medical bills and cheap college. Wife did 3 years of uni plus a post grad for less than the cost of a single year back in Oklahoma. :D

It reminds me of Bulawayo in the 70s/80s. Laid back and one can walk around day or night without having to take an arsenal with you. Great work opportunities, great people and perfect weather. Not much to not like about the place.

And I might be able to to arrange a self hunt up north for a buff. Water buff, but a buff no less. Something I wouldn't be able to afford in Africa.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll contact them and see what they say. Not sure how either they or I would prove the pre 1975 thing but will have a chat to them. There might be a makers stamp under the table top, I'm not sure...
