Need input. Gearing up for another trip to Africa. Got a CZ550 .375 HH in the mail.. I'm thinking of using quick detach rings with the scope (as yet unchosen) and have no experience with them.
Questions:
- How well do they work? Back to zero every time?
- With today's robust rings are they really necessary?
- Any brands recommended over others?
Thanks guys.

Most work really well, back to zero or pretty close at 100 yards. Plenty close to hunt with at normal range without adjustment.

Don't understand this question? The purpose of QD is to be able to easily and quickly move to open sight, or even another scope. They are a convenience and a time save as their name suggests.

Warne, Talley, and Alaskan Arms come up frequently. I've ised both Warne and Talley personally and like them about the same.

Unless you want the option to use iron sights, I wouldn't mess with them. If you do the Tally are pretty awesome.

I like having QD rings if for no other reason than when traveling. I've used Warne and am happy with them. The Talley version are supposed to be a bit more made with precision, but there's a cost increase for that.

I like to seperate my scopes from the rifles and pack them with a lot more protection. I've not only had scopes be far off from zero, I had one that attached to the rifle during transit was dropped so hard one of the internal lenses was knocked completely loose.

By TSA regulations you can actually carry your scopes onto the airplane just as you could a camera or binoculars. This is my plan for next trip.

Thanks for your input. You are right it was a poorly worded question.

Good idea. Thanks.

Not saying you can't carry your scope on the plane but I've herd enough horror stories from people that have tried that I wouldn't and once outside the USA, TSA regulations mean nothing.

I just bought a set of Alaska Arms for my RSM, they are exceptional. Zeroed the rifle and shot two groups, removed the scope and replaced it. Shot another group with no change of impact. I have had good luck with tally QD's also.

After a follow-up using fixed rings on a leopard in the dark in 2008 (fortunately found dead), anything I now take to Africa (or pretty much anywhere else) has dismountable rings. I am convinced that big visible open sights are the only way to go in a follow-up on DG. I have a lot of experience with Talley's, and they have always worked exactly as advertised. I also use Blaser and Contessa mounts on several Blaser rifles/barrels, and they too, have functioned perfectly. When traveling with a Blaser (S2 or R8), I dismount the scope and have never ever had to make an adjustment upon arrival. I also have a half dozen or more weapons with claw mounts, and they also work exactly as designed. I will be in Moz in October with my R8 and a dismountable Leica scope.

Why do you want to remove the scope.
And they are expensive
$150 on rings is the cheapest part of the whole set up, cheaper than a box of ammo in most cases and it is one of the most critical parts of the rifle. Things happen, scopes get damaged, as redleg stated, follow ups on wounded game are typically close and fast. I like the option to remove my optic at will with just my fingers and not need a wrench that can be lost.

I can't say enough good things about the exceptional service with Alaska Arms. Pretty much the most approachable fellow I have ever spoken to.

Alaska Arms are tough to beat and there service is outstanding, I have Leupold Talley Warne and Burris QDs, all are good quality and have never Worked loose

I totally agree on the value of good rings. But $150? I had no idea they were so reasonable.

I am on the range at the moment preparing for a Giraffe hunt next weekend (wil post report) - I am shooting my .375 equipped with Tally QD mounts. Mine returns to a very near zero every time I take them off and put them back on. It not perfect, but good enough to take any animal at 100m without any worries.
It might not be necessary, but it stays a lot of fun shooting a couple of rounds with open sights!
The bush remains unpredictable- I would rather be prepared than not.

I think any Rifle you actually hunt with would benefit from a set of QDs. My 375HH, 404 Jeff, my Mannlicher CZ 308 and now my 35 Whelen all have QDs. I will most likely fit my 7x57 with a set once it's finished

I use Talleys or Leopold on my heavy DG rifles both work fine. The biggest reason I use these it's all I can get in Northern Alberta.

Thanks for all the info guys. I will have to check the various rings / suppliers out on the internet.

In 50 years of hunting big game with a scoped rifle... rough country, horseback, bush plane, etc, etc- I've never had the need to remove a scope quickly in the field. Never had to for any reason come to think of it. Doesn't mean it can't happen or there aren't circumstances where "fast" removal may be needed… I just haven't seen it. I do carry the simple tools to remove a scope if needed. Most common now for my mounts is a small star drive wrench that stays taped to the inside of my gun case. About 20 seconds and presto- scope removed. Another 20 seconds and presto- bases removed (if needed). For the dual dovetail mounts on my large bore, instead of 20 seconds it may be a minute or so to remove scope. :)

I use leupold QD rings on my CZ550 .375 with a leupold VXR and have never had any issues.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
