Interarms Mark X 30-06 conversion project

I just picked up a new to me Interarms Mark X in 30-06. I bought it with the idea of reboring or rebarreling, just not sure where to go with it, although I am wanting a big bore. I currently have a Rem 700 in 35 Whelen, Sauer 100 in 9.3x62, and a Ruger #1 in 375 H&H. I also have 2 other 30-06’s a Savage 110 and Remington 798. I was hoping you fellas may be able to point me in the right direction.

I say ream it to 308 Norma. It used to be a common conversion back in the day.

i'd say it depends on where you want to end up in caliber.

.338-06. The bolt head will still be appropriate for the round.

Very nice rifle! Although the MK X action is the very same action as the Remington 798 and Zastava M70. All excellent just different name.
I have to go along with jpr9954 on the 338-06 as you already have a 9.3X62 and a 35 Whelen. Good friend of mine builds custom rifles and has built quite a few. All are tack drivers. In 338 caliber the biggest advantage you will have is a wide selection of bullet weights to choose from. Another friend using 210grn TTSX bullets took a 9ft., coastal grizzly in Alaska 2 years ago. At 200 yards the bullet penetrated 5 foot of bear before exiting and DRT. Now here's the kicker, while he was working up loads using a chronograph the combustion chamber is so efficient that he was getting velocities to near match factory specs for a 338 Win Mag. No pressure signs and easy bolt lift and extraction.
338-06? Seems a win win to me. I believe you'll like it.

I re- chambered a Husqvarna 30-06 to a 308 Norma mag a couple years ago, no regrets!
If you want a big bore a 416 Taylor will be perfect for the 30-06 action.

How hard was it to modify the bolt face to feed a magnum cartridge??

I will be honest. when I posted this I was thinking 338-06 or a 400 Whelen. However a 416 Taylor was mentioned, I assume this would require a rebarrel and what else to make it work? Just curious

Bear in mind that doing a rebore will limit the size you can go due to the diameter of the barrel at muzzle. The rebore guys like a certain amount of "meat" remaining around the bore. .35 Whelen is about the most you would want to go, but I tend to agree with the others, .338-06 or for something almost completely different and leaving a bit more metal on the barrel, try an 8mm as mentioned above, but perhaps as I did recently, an 8x64s or 8mm-06, std or AI.
Ammo is available and not prohibitively expensive, so there is your source of brass, 8mm bullets are common.
I am very pleased with my Mark X Zastava re-chamber to 8x64.

Form follows function so probably the first question should be "What do you want the rifle to do?"

It seems like you already have the medium to large size game covered with the 9.3, 35 Whelen and 375 H&H. You have the small to medium covered with the two 30-06s. That kinda leaves varmints at one end and dangerous game at the other.
Varmints: re-barrel to between 22-250 and 7mm.
Dangerous Game: re-barrel to between 40 and 458 calibre.

A good bit..

Rails on the bottom of the action have to be opened..

Bolt face opened

Magazine and feed ramp might have to be tweaked to get proper feeding

New barrel...

Which means new sights..


But... all of that said.... totally worth it...

416 Taylor is an awesome round...

And ER Shaw will do all of that for you fairly reasonably as part of their standard “magnum conversion” ...

Their turn around time was pretty good the last time I used them as well...

Why is reboring so populare in US? It surly must be cheaper to have a new barrel made from a blank?

400Whelen, I am sure that is lots of fun!!
Or go the other way, 6,5-06 and enjoy the enormous selection of quality bullets flying at high speed!!

A lot of it is because the fellow in Oregon that does so many of them has a couple of weeks turn - around. He’s not the typical Smitty that holds your work for a year or more. I think the cost is around $300 give or take to rebore and chamber.
