Kuiu hunting gear is more suited for North American hunting, but I'm sure there are some applications in Africa too. Interesting article and comments on the hunting market.

I bought a couple of the Kuiu merino wool shirts (to wear w/ my Sitka jacket and pants) while carrying my Badlands pack. If any on these companies would like to sponsor me, I am open to discussion. :)

Seriously, I hear Kuiu is pretty good stuff.

I have quite a bit of the Sitka stuff and found it to be very good for North American hunting. Have never tried Kuiu and didn't know the story. When any of my Sitka gear fails, I'll give it a look. That may be a while, though . Agree both are better suite here than in Africa.

I recently bought some Kudu stuff. Very light. Went coyote hunting and sat in the snow. All good.

I emailed them about Africa. They had no problems recommending their stuff from durability point of view (thorns, rocks etc) however, they recommended against ironing. I thought that was a problem because of another thread here describing ironing as necessary to avoid some nasty grub inhabiting parts of your body...

I have some of the Kuiu gear.... I really like it. I now actually prefer it over Sitka now. The Sitka seemed to run "small". The Kuiu seems to be a little more forgiving. I think Sitka is for the long & lean.... Kuiu for the rest of us.

All I want is an uninsulated bib, made of a durable, quiet, water resistant, breathable material. Is that too much to ask for? Camo is becoming less important to me. Would actually prefer the option of buying my dream bib in a muted earth tone (both Sitka & Kuiu offer these colours).

I found it quite interesting that the Guide took the Hunters as being "more serious" if they showed up in expensive gear. :ROFLMAO:
Apparently PH's in Africa are much smarter.
When some twit shows up in new fancy gear the PH gets scared.
The tags are still on his gear, never shot his new rifle, but he has lots of money so he must be serious!
Apparently when the target species can kill you, you become a little more insightful.

:D Cheers: Cheers to all you African PH's.

Wayne,
As I've found a pair of jeans and an olive colored shirt works just fine when hunting the big boys. Now I would like to have one of those make me invisible suits like you have!

They custom make those in RSA in what colours you might like.

Maybe Pieter can take me to that store!

There's a place called "Working Person Store" that I buy Carhartt and 5.11 pants & shirts from online. Carhartt makes a lot of different bib overalls. I never liked them for hunting as I thought they were a bit noisey and the bib buckle is close to where you shoulder your rifle. But to each his own. Take a look at these:

Thanks. I've looked at the Carhart. I agree that they are too noisy, and I am trying to get away from cotton, as once wet, it stays wet.

I am down to my last set of cotton Walls bibs. I like the design. I would love to get my hands on some of Cabelas' Microtex material and have a couple of sets made.

I am going to stop wearing camo here in the USA because it works so good that the last 2 years of deer hunting NOT ONE legal deer has seen me or me seen them. :) The stuff just works too good.

I have lots of Kuiu stuff, and I like it - it's become my go-to brand ever since I first saw it at the SCI show many years ago. The products are well designed and well made, often with very interesting and useful fabric innovations.

Having said that, it is made for North America and while much of the gear will perform as well in Africa, I've found that the prevalence of thorns in Africa tends to be hard on many items. I know many of you guys seem to be able to avoid thorns (or so you say ;)) . . . but I seem to attract them!

Bottom line - as with anything - is think about where you're going and what will work best there.

AB2506: Check out a place called "Outdoor Fabrics": http://www.owfinc.com/fabrics.html as they sell GoreTex and other material in bulk. You can also Google "camo material bulk" and get several listings for places that sell bulk material. Is the Cabelas Microtex some sort of poly material? If yes, then some of these bulk material places offer that sort of material. Hope it works out for you.

Kuiu Gear is made for hunting in the extreme conditions of places like North America and New Zealand. Extremely warm and waterproof, and amazingly tough for being so light in weight. But as many have already stated, probably too over-engineered for Africa hunting. I hate their camo colors, but they do sell gear in brown, which I own. I love the athletic fit of their clothing; not too tight and not too baggy.

In Africa - shorts an T-shirts! My last hunt in Alaska, I would have died in cotton jackets, jeans, and Courtney boots. 2 different hunting scenarios that require 2 different sets of gear and levels of fitness.

I also have Sitka gear, very good stuff.

Sitka no doubt runs small. I had to return several items when I first bought them.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
