If one is going to hunt the Eastern Cape and is flying from Atlanta on Delta, would it make more sense to fly to Cape Town rather than Johannesburg? Or at least as much sense?

The flight time is marginally shorter on DL210 going to Cape Town than on DL200 to Johannesburg. From what I can see, it is about a half hour shorter. Additionally, you save another half hour on the flight to Port Elizabeth.

I didn't realize that Delta had a regular flight to Cape Town until recently. I knew that they had stopped there to top off fuel sometimes on the return flight.

With all things being equal, would having a flight that takes off and arrives at sea level (Cape Town) versus one that is on a high plateau (Jo'Burg) mean that more seats would be available?

We just returned from a hunt in the Eastern Cape and flew to Johnnesburg, spent the night, then flew to Port Elizabeth the next morning. It was about three hours from our PH's home base to PE vs seven to Cape Town. The next time I go, we plan to fly to Cape Town to avoid the extra flights. We can do some sight seeing for a couple days on the way to the Eastern Cape, and then again on the way back.

HAVE THIS SAME DILEMMA FLYING NEXT YEAR, LOOKING FOWARD TO THE RATIONALE.

I would fly out of capetown and spend a few extra days there on the front of back of the hunt if possible. Hit up table mountain. Check out the penguins. Go to a winery. Weather can be hit or miss in the winter, but it’s still worth a shot.

In the 1977 film, Star Wars, Obi-wan Kenobi referred to the space-port as "a wretched hive of scum and villainy". I believe he was talking about Os-Isley and not OR Tambo. Probably. This is a no brainer......use Cape Town .....FWB

This is what I have been wondering about. I live outside Atlanta, so it makes so much sense to go to Cape Town. Also I’d like to see the Cape and do some sightseeing in Cape Town if I’m in RSA.

One thing to be careful with the CPT route is that it doesn't fly everyday.

I had a high school teacher that loved to say, "All things are rarely equal!"

JNB elevation is over 5751 ft, but runway length is 14,500 ft.

CPT elevation is around 151 ft, essentially sea level, but runway length is 10,500 ft.

This is a rather extensive article on the subject:

That reminds me of an econ prof I had. He used the term ceteris paribus which translates to all things being equal and then said it would not be n the exam. Guess what was on the exam!

The last time I looked at the cape two route, it was significantly more expensive to fly into. I haven't checked recently though?

I just ran the numbers for Delta flying out on Aug 1 and returning Aug 15.

To Jo'Berg RT, the fare is $2,116. To Cape Town, it is $2,294. Both are Economy fares and non-stop.

With stops, I found a combo of United and Ethiopian for $1648 to Jo'Berg using the same dates. To Cape Town, again using United and Ethiopian Air, it was $1756.

To keep thing equal, I assumed Atlanta was the departure point in the US.

That is good to see them somewhat the same now. I know before, and I was looking more at premium select seats, that the cost differences were in the $800 range. That was on Delta and a direct flight from Atlanta. I flew into Cape Town from Victoria Falls in the mid afternoon on my recent trip a couple of weeks ago and that was a joy. First time I had an immigration officer actually smile and ask how I was doing.

On my flight to Kasane, and trying to leave South Africa out of Joberg, I had an interesting experience with the officer there. They kept asking me if I had been fingerprinted, and what flight I flew in on, and when I arrived. She was the most rude person I have ever dealt with. I can't hear very well and every time I told her I am having a hard time hearing her, instead of speaking up, she just shook her head and gave up. Baffling. She kept asking the same questions over and over and I kept giving her the same answer. She finally asked for my itinerary. After that, she started to laugh and said that my passport on arrival didn't scan into the system so she could only see my trip from June 2022. I have never really had a bad experience in Joberg but that one, and it wasn't super bad. She was just a complete ass about it all.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
