I have long been toying with the idea of a different pg rifle. I own a variety of combination guns. I have looked at the Krieghoff Ultra combination with different sets of barrels. Only available in 20ga....which is a problem for me....

So now enter the Krieghoff Drilling....

12ga is available...I have saved up and need to start finalising my options....

Base will be and what I am sure about:

12ga/12ga/9.3×74R(12ga is 3")
Double triggers
Set trigger front trigger
One insert barrel will be 22 Hornet....
Fixed chokes 1/2 and 3/4
Scope mounts
Thermo stabil barrels with covers

What I am not sure about

Do I go for another 9.3x74R insert barrel(giving me a double 9.3 with a 12ga) and have soft and solid loaded or do I go for a different smaller caliber?(7x65R)?

22 or 24 inch barrels?

Sideplates?

Anything else to consider??

First, may I suggest that you check with Krieghoff that the action is designed for an insert barrel with the pressure of 9.3x74 or 7x65R. Also, I wonder about the handling qualities of a 12 ga drilling with an insert barrel. The only 12 ga drilling I've personally handled ( a Suhl drilling) was quite heavy and bulky. Perhaps the Krieghoff is well balanced and slim enough. But handling one before you pay your money might save you from some second thoughts.
To answer your question, 24" barrels are a tiny bit easier to shoot properly as a shotgun on moving game. Better balance and swing dynamics. But weight plays a role too. 24" might be too heavy. I'd want an extra barrel in 9.3x74R for times when the shotgun is unlikely to be used and the primary hunt is for lager game. A second shot can be very useful at times. Sideplates are a great place to display nice engraving, so if engraving is your preference, why not!

And here it comes....

It is not a Krieghoff, it is not a 12 ga, but it is all you need, and it is affordable!

Very nice but useless as 16ga ammo here is a problem.....

I like the idea of a second 9.3x74.
Are these full length inserts or short?
Longwalker makes a good point about longer barreled shotguns easier to shoot, but it’s more weight.
Wonder how regulated the insert is especially with the scope?
K guns are really fine!
Personally I’m into function and not form, so I would lean toward no side plates.

First you have to zero the scope to the point of impact of your "main barrel"..... as you do it with every rifle.
Than you regulate the point of impact of your insert barrel to the point of impact of the main barrel.
You can regulate the insert barrel with screws at the muzzle.
Sometimes it is tricky, because regulation has to be done with cold barrels.
But it gives you a good feeling when it is done.

You might want to look for a double rifle drilling, though as far as I know they have a 20 as the shot barrel. They are also expensive.

12g drillings are heavy and much less “swingable” than the 16 or 20 size. However if you’re limited by supply it’s the way to go. The Zoli is what I would look for, it’s allegedly built like a tank. I believe they don’t come with 3” chambers though. Actually I’m not sure any 12g drilling does, but anything is possible.

You might, just might be able to get yourself a kind of “bock” drilling by choosing a 7x65R or a 30-06 lower barrel and the 9.3 insert.

Mine is an old (50s) Krieghoff Drilling, 7x65R - 16/70 with a SuB 3-12x50 scope and an insert barrel .22 Hornet. It's a heavy setup! Even without a scope, your Drilling with one or two! inserts won't have the advantages of a good double rifle. A double rifle drilling might be the better choice. Just for thoughts. I gave the Krieghoff to my daughter as an all purpose gun for hunting from high seats. My father's Sauer Drilling (7x57-16/70) without insert barrel is much more handy for me.;)
Strengthen the youth!
