Leupold vx 5hd 2 - 10 power

I've got 4 of the VX6HDs, what would you like to know? I don't have a 416, but I've got one mounted on a 9.3x74R Ruger #1 loaded with a 325 gr @ 2350 fps , which has substantial recoil due to it's light weight and I've had no problems there.

Was just wondering on the eye relief and whatnot. How durable they were. Much of a difference between the vx6 ans vx5?

I had on on a 416 Rem mag Winchester Model 70. I have them on CZ 375 HH, 7x57. Have VX5 HD 1-5 on 458 Lott. What would you like to know about them?

The major differences besides the zoom ratio (5 vs 6) is that all VX6HD have an illuminated dot or reticle (I really like this feature). The VX6HD also has a zero lock/stop exposed windage turret, which I consider useless (I hold for wind). VX6 also has an internal level sensor that can flash the reticle if the scope/rifle is canted if you desire (doubt you will care with a 416).

The lens quality and construction is identical.

Eye relief I'd consider generous, more than most except my old Burris 2-7. It has enough that I can use standard rings on my #1 which is notorious for needing extended rings to bring the scope far enough back. If I shoot my #1 from the bench then I can feel the scope barely brush my eyebrow (calculator says 47 ft/lb of recoil energy and 19 fps recoil velocity for this gun)

Durability seems excellent but I haven't really dropped them on a rock or anything so I can't speak to extremes.

I will add that for the money, I think the VX5/6HD are the best hunting scope out there right now. I've got some other nice optics like Zeiss Victory, S&B, Leica, etc but 4 of my last 5 scope purchases have been one flavor or another of the VX6HD. Leupold has managed to get really good optics and features into a package that weighs a lot less than their high end competition as well, and I'm loathe to top my hunting rifle with a 2 or 3 lb scope.

My big bores were ment for DG, and ranges under 200 yards and only a precious few at over 100 yards, plus DG can and does result in an ocassional charge, I used the 3X Leupold on most of my big bores or iron sights..Ive seen too many varible fans fussing with dials, and power knobs when they should have been shooting, bigger is better in certain conditions, but not for hunting DG/

Mark,

When you had this on your Model 70, how did it fit?
I’ve got a Model 70 in 375 H&H on the way. Looking at the VX5 2-10 for it, my concern is the tube will not have adequate mounting space. I’m hoping to avoid having the front mount protrude rearward over the action port.

Curious to know your mounting set up.

Thanks!

I have a VX5 HD 2-10 on my 416 Rem M70. I love it. Also has the firedot. Both VX6 and VX5 have the ballistic turret that you can have customized for your load. 5X or 6X magnification. But a significant jump in price to go to 6X. I used it in Tanzania this year for Buff. It will stay on my 416. I have about 5 of these on various rifles 2-10 and 3-15.
Best bang for your buck!

Great to hear!
So no issues with the length of the tube fitting a magnum length action?

No issues with tube length if you choose the right mounts.
Talley bases with their QD rings work perfect. Also have used Warne bases and Leupold QD rings without any problems.
Here is 416 set up with Warne and Leupold

I used Leupold Base #49835. Rings QRW #174076. Or PRW2 #174084. Weaver style Base with either the quick release or permanent base.
