Can anyone point me to some loading data for the 7x61 S&H with modern powders? I have older data from several sources, but the powders included are the oldies--IMR4350, H4831, etc. Are there some more recent sources that would include the Alliant and Vihtavuori powders and possibly other newer ones?

The best I could do is a 1982 version of Hornady’s reloading manual. All the powders list I am pretty sure are still available. However none of the two you mentioned. Ballistics look as good as the 7mm Rem Mag.

Really odd this cartridge never took off, 10 years older than the 7mm Remington Magnum. Great ballistics with a longer neck for better accuracy than the Remington as well. There are other great cartridges that predate some North American standards, 308 and 358 Norma Magnums just to name a couple. Have fun with your load development, sounds like a fun project.

I think the reason for the 7x61 S&H's lukewarm reception was twofold: (a) cartridges were made by Norma, and not an American company, with attendant higher prices and possibly uncertain availability, and (b) the only factory rifles chambered for the cartridge were the beautifully-made Danish Schultz & Larsen rifles, which carried a very high price tag relative to American-made rifles of the time. Consulting my 1970 Gun Digest, I see the S&L M68DL listed at $485 (even more than the Weatherby Mk. V at $329), whereas a Rem. 700 was listed at $149, and a Win. M70 at $162. I think that, if Remington or Winchester had picked up the 7x61 S&H, it would have taken off the way the 7 Rem. Mag. did in 1962.

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
