Mannlicher Full Length Stock. Any Real Purpose?

Do Mannlicher stocks actually do anything? Or are the just for aesthetic purposes. I can understand if you said that it reduces barrel harmonics, but that wouldn't matter unless you were shooting at extreme long distances. Thoughts?

Great question and one that I've been wondering about as well. And it was brought up for me today as I was talking to a gunsmith and he pulled out his personal favorites.. A 6.5 x55, a 7x57, and 9.3 x 62 in full stock short barreled guns. He likes the balance and quick handling. And told me about a 440 yard hit on a baboon with the 6.5 x 55.

To me they seem like the lever guns of Europe. I don't have one but I do think one in 9.3 x 62 would be a cool thing to own!

I really don't know either but I would trade my left......arm for the CZ -06 with the mannlicher stock.

I'm pretty sure the full length rifle stock was designed for carbine length barrels and used on mountain rifles in the European alps. The purpose of the full length stock is to protect the barrel from damage, especially if the barrel was used a brake in the case of a fall on snow.

I could care less of their purpose, I have always had a soft spot for them. So (my opinion /reasoning ) it's the look.

Direct lineage back to the flint and percussion jaeger rifles. Did indeed become carbine length in more modern smokeless weapons with the '03 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoenauer setting the standard for the next 112 years. My Schoenauer 6.5x57 shoots about 1.5 inches at 100 meters. But this is a 250 meter carbine (the likening to a model 94 is I think accurate), and the a 1.5 inch group is MOA of any deer in Texas. Above all they are a joy to carry. Fully tanked up, with scope in place, mine may weigh 6.5 lbs.

Purely for beauty and to protect the barrel. They do look lovely!

I've seen some ruger RSI model 77s in 7x57 stainless and thought for a guy on a frugal budget they are quite a functional piece of beauty in what is a very ugly gun price point (<$800)

While I do not own any rifle with a full length stock, I suppose I am probebly not qualified to comment, but I will anyway. A full length stock should give you a lot better surface area when using a rest, such as shooting sticks, or tree branch, fence post or whatever, without accidentally putting pressure on the barrel or shooting from a less than comfortable position keeping the stock on the rest. For what it's worth..

I had a left handed Heym 7x57 Mannlicher stocked rifle that I took on safari as a back up a few times. I ended up using it quite often with 139 grain Hornady Light Magnums. I remember a very nice gemsbuck bull in the red dunes of the Namib desert. At about 110 meters I took him in the left shoulder and the little bullet penetrated to the opposite shoulder and we recovered it under the hide- one and done...I still have. I always thought the full length stock was meant to protect the barrel from the rocks. Anyway, they are pretty...

Balance. Its all about balance.

Short barrels with a full length stock can be made to balance more easily than short barrels with a short forend.

In Europe people say that full length stock are designed for mountain hunters but many of them won't see any rock as the people buy them for the look.
Yes the wood protect the barrel but shall never touch the barrel. The hunter can put the riffle on his bag or on a rock and the barrel remain always free and can vibrate without constraint which is better for the precision.

Saw a Mod70 Mannlicher 30-06 on Gunbroker but I allready have a Mod98 in 30-06 that I can't part with. CZ ,Marlin Winchester etc don't make a 7x57 any more lett alone in a Mannlicher,,Now Zastava still does but you'll play hell trying to find one

I received a phone call from a gentleman that was a friend of my Uncle that lives in New Jersey one day, he asked if I would be interested in a rifle he had because my Uncle had told him of my affliction. He said he would be Passing through my town and wanted to meet. He arrived and met me at the courthouse parking lot and drug out a custom built Mannlicher stocked '03. It was a nice rifle, well built on a great action. I asked him what he wanted for it and he said his Dad had built the rifle and he had no children of his own to pass the gun to and gave it to me. As odd as it was, totally true story. I will post a pic of it next time I unload the safe that it is in to oil iron.

not sure of the real purpose, they do look good though.
hadnt really paid any attention to them until a few years ago, then i got to see and handle Spike.T's 9,3 recently... and its been downhill from there, like a nagging itch...
so i'm talking to my dad about rifles the other day and told him i like the looks of the full stock, its something thats grown on me. so he tells me he had an 8x57js Brno full stock and he sold it many moons ago to a friend of ours... long story short, we've been trying to locate it since! will post pics if we can ever find it.
it was given to him by his dad, he regrets selling it, but back then when ammo in Zambia was scarce, he sold it in favour the the 300wm which is now in my safe
