while recently looking at the mauser website, and expecting to see the usual ho hum crap, i got a pleasant surprise.
they are producing a m98 again.
the rifles have to my mind pleasing lines, with modern classic stock design.
there is a magnum action for the 416 and 450 rigby, 4 shot mags, and 375, 6 shot mag.
the latter would be useful for culling work more so than trophy hunting.
these rifles are not cheap.
if they are worth what they charge for them, they should be good rifles.
a moderm m98 with the word mauser on it, and made of modern steel with modern technology.

Really? And what aspect of the .375 offends your trophy hunting sensibilities? The magazine capacity or the caliber? If the .375 is anything like the .416 I recently held it would be a wonderful "Trophy" or any other hunting rifle! I can't imagine not taking advantage of the action's magazine capacity regardless of what I was hunting.

no aspect at all redleg.
neither the mag capacity or the calibre.
my whole post suggested as you comment that it seems like a good rifle.
cant work out how you responded in such a way from what i wrote, which was an observation.
the bigger capacity would be, as i also said, more useful for culling than trophy hunting.
if you have no trophy after 3 shots, you either need a bigger gun, or learn how to shoot.
perhaps this is your real issue.

Your right Bruce. I can't shoot.

But, I was also out of line with how I responded. The notion that one of the finest production rifles in the world was inappropriate for trophy hunting due to magazine capacity flew all over me. I now understand your real intent.

However, the new Mauser is a beautiful rifle. I have held one in .416. It holds four rounds which is what well behaved .416 Mauser can hold. I have a custom .375 which will hold five in the magazine. If they can get six in the new reincarnation, why not? That is a couple less on the belt or in the pocket. The typical hunter won't have one up the snout until approaching game, which means it is a five-round rifle in most situations. I have never had to use more than two shots on a buffalo (just lucky, with the way I shoot), but I was always grateful for an additional two or three rounds. When using a double, I had two in my left hand, and when using my Mauser or my R8, I take the time to top-off after chambering a round. All of which is comforting. Six sounds like a pretty good design concept to me.

ben,
i'd bet money anything on a magnum action would cost more than the std action version.
in the old days mauser cut actions into 2 parts and welded parts together to create the longer magnum.
the shorter bits were also welded together to make actions for the likes of 250 savage.

@bruce moulds ..Bruce unless you are referring to a new 98 action that just came out this year, that I don't know about, they have been around at least since 2015. At DSC in 2015, the Mauser display was directly next to John Rigby. The Big Game with a double square bridge and the M98 magnum are nearly identical except for the barrel and receiver markings. At that time, I was able to compare them side by side with both having I believe grade 5 wood. The M98 was $1000-$2000 less expensive than the base model Rigby Big Game. The barrel and action were the same, since that is were Rigby obtains their barrelled actions. And of course the Rigby has many upgrades available where the Mauser 98 has very few to my knowledge. I can assure you that I would just as gladly accept a Mauser 98 magnum as a Rigby Big Game. They are for all practical purposes the same rifle.
If you acquire one, post pics for all of our benefit!

Considering Mialls are the Aust Importer and do not list a price I would say the cost is somewhere north your and your first born's kidney.

I hope not as I was considering a 416.

sierraone,
thank you for that.
most interesting.
also interesting is the comparison to the current rigby and the possible connection.
my tastes in guns are like wine and cars.
i cannot afford what i recognise as what i want.

Bruce, they are directly connected by actions and barrels. Agree with you also about cars too. Would love to have a 69 Olds 442! Or some of the other muscle cars of that era. Not much of a drinker though, just occasionally at a dinner out normally!

Mauser, Blaser, Rigby, JP Sauer, and GSG (SIG) are all part of the L&O Group. The parent company has promised to be more than a mere holding company, and the cooperation between the Mauser and Rigby members is a way to take advantage of those relationships to keep their products competitive in the upper end production rifle market. The market for "bespoke" bolt actions is pretty small (though Rigby will be delighted to put one of those together for you as well). But European gun makers can successfully compete in upper range production rifles. They have no plans are desire to build a Ruger American equivalent, but they can compete with Dakota.

I have no idea if my Rigby Highland Stalker is "worth" its price by some objective measurement. It absolutely is worth it in my purely subjective appreciation of the rifle. I also suspect that as new rifles go, it has probably depreciated less than most as a percentage of resale value, and will likely only have improved when my blushing widow finally sells the collection (though my son will likely keep that one.) I expect the new Mausers would do as well.

My vintage car bug is more utilitarian. I have a 41 Chevy pickup (and I will admit it drives like a tractor).

there are some beautiful rifles around that are easy to REALLY want, and the mauser is one of them.
my own position is that i would be wise not to look at them.given that i will never shoot an elephant or a rhino, my current 9.3x64 will have to do.
it consists of a mk10mauser action purched for Aust$200.00, and a lothar walther prechambered barrel fitted and headspaced by a gunsmith.
the stock i made myself from a $200.00 blank i had for 20 uears.
the stock is painted black to hide the car bog used to fix mistakes.
in the real world it shoots around the moa, and with 300 gn swift aframes will take on anything i am likely to shoot.
lighter bullets make it versatile.
it does the job, but has no wow factor.
bruce.
