my scope is too short

as many of you know I was looking for a scope for my CZ 550 375 H&H and I ended up buying a VX-R 2-7x33. well I love the power range and found it very easy to hit a 300 yard target (my personal limit). however I have a big problem with the scope being too short, due to the length of the magnum action the scope just barely fits in the warne QD rings. there is no room at all to move the scope which means the scope is too far away from my eye at 5x+. at 7x I have a choice and that is to retract my shoulder and stretch myself out over the stock to get a full picture or I have to accept a small poor picture. stretching myself out to see at 7x is hurting my accuracy and makes the gun difficult to hold steady.

I either need to find a way to bring my scope back about an inch or I need a different scope and rings. suggestions?

The leupolds have some of the most generous eye relief of any manufacturer. However, the 2x7 is a fairly compact scope and I can see it would be a challenge on a large action. I have had a lot of luck with the old VX3 in 1.5x5. I have a custom .404 built on the 550 action and it works fine with the 30mm version. The 1" version sits on a couple of break action rifles and a drilling, all of which have the same gap issue to the original claw bases. The straight tube will give you that extra inch.

I thought about the 1.5-5x20 but that doesn't seem like enough power or light gathering for 300 yard shots in the overcast low light state I live in. id like to be able to use this rifle for elk and mule deer and those critters often require long shots. as far as I can tell the only leupold scope that "might" fit well is the VX2 3-9x40 but its hard to tell without sitting it on the gun.

extended rings, the are "off set" rearward to provide an additional inch of scope movement.

Another option are the Trijicon 3x9's. And they are excellent in low light.

Try installing a picatinny or weaver rail/base if you can find one. It will give you the adjustment you need.

johnney7604, I know im being too picky at this point but... I hate rails on hunting rifles. it just doesn't look proper and having one on express rifle seems even more wrong. I suppose if the rail was QD and could be removed easily it wouldn't be so bad but ive never seen a QD rail.

I have the same scope on the same rifle and understand your situation although I don't have the problem you are having. I have the Alaska Arms QD rings instead of the Warn. I don't know if the rings make any difference though. (I am 5'8" so not real long in the reach.) A couple of thoughts:

1. My CZ 550 has a 3/16 spacer between the stock and pad. You could remove it.

2. You could cut the stock down to the desired length. (Or have a gunsmith do it) This might be your cheapest option. (allowing you to keep your scope which you have put good money into.)

3. I don't know anything about the Warn QD rings. This is just a thought....can you machine 1/8 off the front of the front ring and 1/8 off the back of the rear ring without loosing any integrity in the rings? This would give you an extra 1/4.

Matt, you need to make sure your objective bell has clearance room above the rail. It looks tight.

I took a look at the Alaska arms QD rings and it doesn't look like they are any shorter length wise then the warne rings. they do look like they probably weigh less though.

as far as removing the spacer in the stock, that might be something to try but ive got to measure the stock first as the length of pull didn't feel too long. im 5'11" and usually use 14" LOP. according to the CZ website the LOP on this rifle is 13.74" but unfortunately I just sent the rifle back to the factory this afternoon to have the action worked on so I cant measure it now.

I’m resurrecting a thread from the dead, but I am having the same issues on a ZG47 in 30-06 with a VX-R 3-9 scope.

Has anyone had luck with extended rings for the CZ/Brno dovetails?

That is why I like Picatinny rails. Allows you to place scopes or red dots anywhere.
