Well let’s start with one of my hunting stories which I had in the Year 2014 in Namibia. We booked a two weeks hunting trip in the Area of Okahandia and in the Area of Gobabe.
This story is about a Oryx hunt in the Area of Gobabe. I hunted for 5 days in the farm Hetaku, hosted by Klaus. The Farm belongs to the Black Nossob Conservacy (aprox. 180.000 ha) – one of the largest and richest in game areas in Namibia. Its border on one side runs for 18 km along the Black Nossob River. The range has an area of about 8.000 ha.
After the lunch we took the Jeep and we drove for an hour. As Gustav, our tracker spotted a group of Oryx and Hartebeests, my PH Klaus decided to leave the Jeep. We made a Walk & Stalk for about an hour until we got to the brink of the bush. So we were able to spot into an open area which allowed Gustav to select one of the Oryx. This Oryx had a splinter on the upper part of the left horn so the PH decided as a Selection-Hunt (not a Trophy Hunt).
Now a new decision: Due to the Fact that we were not able to stalk closer as the measured 300 yards (275 meters), Gustav asked me if I’m able to shoot from the Shooting Sticks at that distance. Well I have trained at home a lot by shooting from the Sticks, so I told him that I could manage the shot. My Rifle is a R93 Professional success in .300 Weatherby Magnum, loaded with the “Gian-Marchet” copper Bullets 140 Grains with an muzzle Velocity of 990 m/s. I took the shot and the Oryx went immediately down (DRT). I reloaded the Rifle and I aimed for approx. 5 Minutes, because Gustav told me, a few weeks before a Hunting Guest lost an Oryx after a lousy shot. So I aimed at the Oryx, waiting for any kind of movements. But no movements after five Minutes.
Facts:
Very old Oryx bull, approx.. 15 Years old. The upper part of the left Horn has a splint. The weight of the Animal, measured at the Farm, is about 250 kg. The shot was a completely pass thru, the Bullet worked very well, the PH was astonished.
Ammo: .300 Weatherby Magnum, reloaded with Norma Cases and RWS R903 powder.
Bullet: “Gian-Marchet” Jenatsch Bullet, 140 Grains (9,0 gram), B.C. of 0.400.
Muzzle Velocity: measured 982 m/s
