New German Weapons Transit Process Effect 10 July 2013

[TRAVEL EXPRESS]

A new policy went into effect on July 10th for all passengers who transit through Frankfurt with firearms. There were some questions at first whether you needed this if bags were checked through but I have finally received clarification that this is needed for everyone who transits Frankfurt, Germany (same as the Netherlands permit) regardless of whether or not you are required to touch your checked baggage. There is an application to be completed, a fee of 20 Euro to be wired and proof of firearm license (US Customs 4457).

You must pay the wire fee first and then submit proof of the payment, along with completed transit application and copy of your 4457. An automated reply will come back saying that it can take 4 weeks to process. You may also get a reply that the firearm license (4457) must be translated by a certified translator but I also just got clarification that this is not necessary. The permits have been coming back on email within about a week of submitting the above documents.

The fee must be paid by wire transfer bank to bank. Documents need to be submitted to the email address: transfer@stadt-frankfurt.de

I recommend putting your departure date in the subject line especially if you have 4 weeks or less lead time.

I have clients that departed before this took effect but came back after July 10th and did not have any problems but they may be starting to crack down on this and getting procedures in place since it's so new.

Hi Rob44 ~ just wanted to clarify there are no fees "currently" associated with the Netherlands in transit permit. It's a paperwork process but it does have to be obtained prior to departure and can take them 4-6 weeks to process.

Here is another add on. Obtained by painful experience heading to Africa.
They (FRANKFURT) apparently wants a Permit for BOWS as well.

My buddy got hassled like you would not believe.
I have never heard of it before and we thought we were golden.

I have no ability to research from this remote location but I wanted to provide a heads up.

Just went through your thread, thanks for all the work and info. I still don't know if I need a permit as my rifles will be sent all the way to Windhoek by the airline. The travel agent at the show in Calgary insist that I need it, no matter what. My travel agent said I don't. Emailed Frankfurt but know reply as of yet.

Did you get your Canadian export permit?
The first step, no matter what.

It would be interesting if you get a reply from the Frankfurt police is a timely manner.
The first folks I dealt with were absolutely awesome. I then ran into some more stubborn folks.

The Firearms Permit is a Frankfurt Police matter.
I was certain I needed it and that certainly helps in the decision making.

If you do not get a reply, I would personally pay the money and send the form in. CYA!
If you are fluent in German and can speak to the police I would call them.

Applying for the export permit this week. I plan on getting the permit just to cover my butt, better safe then sorry. My German is limited to a few swear words a friend thought me 40 years ago.

I just wired the money over for my German permit today. My bank, ATB, wanted an address as well as the details that are provided above in Lori's post. As soon as it is debited from my account I can tell you if that worked or not. I should know on Monday the teller told me.
I will post as soon as I have verification that where I wired the money to is the correct address.

Brickburn I tried for days to get the online form to load but it just wouldn't open for me. I opted to do the paper version and it was a breeze. I will admit that I had a little help from a member on the Alberta Outdoorsman forum but none the less I had the export permit e-mailed to me 3 days after faxing it to them. Color me SHOCKED!

I'd be happy to help anyone if they have questions. I kept the copies of what I faxed to the government so I could help the other fellas out that were going with me. I guess I'm kinda the guinea pig for the paperwork portion of the trip. Maybe they'll all get together and buy me a Kudu for the headache.Lol

Export or Import permits are fairly fast. I've had import permits within 24 hours.

The Canadian website was scheduled to modify the online forms to make it a one step process. That may be a wet dream.

They are great at getting the permits issued now. Glad you got it worked out.
