Well I was wanting to get one of the round body VC 450/400's and had been saving for a bit, but was still a good bit under what I would need. I came across this really nice SIACE Alaskan 45/70 that I already had enough saved for. So guess what followed me home and the difference will go towards our 2018 safari. I have a couple boxes of the Federal 300gr ammo it is regulated for and have some test loads with 350gr and 405 gr softs that I will see if I can get them to work also. Time to get out to the range:LOL:

Nice...Congrats!!

Very cool AZDave!

Very nice wood on this rifle Dave! And I do like the 45-70!

Nice! Now the fun and frustration starts. Enjoy your Rifle

Dave,
I handled one of those at the DSC a couple of years ago it was nice. It seemed a little light for heavy loads, but may be just the ticket for standard 300 grain .45-70 ammo.
Please let us know how it shoots and also about the recoil.

PS - WRT different bullet weights, I have had good success with hand loaded 300 and 400 grain ammo in my Simson Suhl .405 Winchester. With a little tinkering I have the 400 grain Woodleighs at 2050 fps shooting to the same point of aim as the 300 grain Hornadys.

CRS I came up with a 300gr load with Hawk bullets in my 405 that is 1 3/4 two rights two lefts at 50. What did you use for loads on the 400gr?

The SIACE is regulated with factory federal premium 300gr bear claws right at 1900 fps. So I am using that as a starting point for the 350gr and will start at 1850fps ish and work up to 2000 and see what regulates best. I am also going to try the 405 remington bulk bullets and see if I can also get them to regulate keeping my pressures below 32K. Planning on a range session this weekend, weather permitting.

AZ Dave,
400 grain Woodleigh .411 FMJ and Weldcore same bullets as in my 1895 .405.
Starting load of N133 drives them @2024 and when testing for accuracy with my Simson, I put 4 (2 each FMJ and Weldcore) into a one inch ragged hole at 50 yards using the scope (I was testing the gun and ammo, not my eyes :) ). With a bit more powder, it will be easy to reach 2050 fps with the 400 grain Woodies. As you know, the N133 runs at 10K psi below most other powders, so these 400 grain loads are below 40K psi and very safe in my Simson action which was proofed at 49K psi with 400 grain bullets.

CRS I will have to give the N133 a try, I have heard good things about it but have been using AA2495 in my 405 and had good luck with it. I would like to be able to work with 350 and 400 gr in the 405. Plan on taking this 45/70 to the range this weekend and see how well it shoots.

best of luck with your new double.

Made it to the range last weekend. Tested 3 different powder 6 different loads with the 350gr round nose and 3 powders and 5 loads on the 405gr. Was able to get a load with each that is within a inch of the factory federal bullets it is regulated with. Now will fine tune the powder a grain each way. and try different primers and should be able to match or better the factory 300gr. The rifle handles well, balance is correct. Will need to do a little fine tuning on the comb that will require refinishing the stock. But I have plenty of files, sandpaper, and oil finish. Will post results when I work out the best final loads. Was a great first range session.

Sounds as if you are off to a very good start.

Very nice! I'm jealous. ..

I have an Alaska Lusso in 45/70, It is a great rifle and I found Siace great to deal with when i ordered it. The big thing I like is I wanted left handed and they made not only left hand stock, But the action is also left handed and I also ordered my with ejectors. They also regulated my with the Hornady LEVERevolution 325 grain that I requested, Which was my standard bullet that i was using in my Marlin 1895SBL.

It is good to hear that they have good customer service.. Made it back out to the range and have a very good load worked up for the 405gr REM bullets. Still need to get the 350gr round nose back out to confirm the load. Ordered some Hawk 400gr and getting ready to order some CEB and Northfork solids. I thought I had some in the shop but they a 480 and 500gr for the 450NE. I am really happy with this rifle. Next will be the hard decision of the 45/70 or 405 Win double for a 2018 lioness???
