Hi everyone, im new to the forum but have been interested in hunting Africa for a long time. I've been a big bore rifle enthusiast for a while now too. I had a ruger number one in 450/400 nitro express and traded it a little while ago. I just picked up two cz 550 american safari's. One is in 375 h&h and the other is in 458 lott. I had shot my ruger 450/400 quite a bit so im not too worried about the 375 h&h but the 458 lott will be a new animal for me haha. I'm going to be ordering a leupold vx-3 1.5-5 power scope with talley quick detach rings for the 375 relatively soon and am going to leave the 458 lott with just the irons. I'm hoping to be able to go to Africa and hunt some dangerous game at some point in my life. Hopefully my ammo order will be here in the next few days so i can get some trigger time in! Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated! I'm looking forward to absorb as much knowledge about big bores and hunting in Africa as i can. Thanks for your time and I'm excited to be part of this excellent forum!

Welcome to AH Voodooracer! I've never shot a 450/400 before but I've shot a 458 Win Mag several times and was a little surprized when the 375 H&H in a 700 Rem that I recently bought about kicked my teeth out, first rifle I've ever owned that left black and blue marks on my shoulder and what I've heard the 458 Lott is a beast but have fun with them. If you have any questions Just Fire away and the Good Members of this site will try to answer them for you.

Thanks Bobpuckett! I am really enjoying the forum so far and everyone seems to be extremely friendly and helpful. The 450/400 isnt too bad on the shoulder, its fairly stout but more of a hard push than a sharp smack. Shooting big bores takes a totally different technique to shoot comfortably than the small bores, thats for sure. For bench shooting I invested in a lead sled and some weights haha. The cz's are a bit heavier than my ruger was so im hoping that helps tame things a little bit. Fortunately im not recoil shy at all so they will just take some getting used to. I definitely will, ill be sure to post a range report when i get them out on the range. Hopefully i will be able to test them out in the next few days.

hi voodooracer welcome aboard. the 550s are quite heavy so the .375 wont be a problem, and it will make the .458lott feel ok. you will feel it if shooting off the bench but with the sled i presume it will not boot you at all , never used one! my 2 .458lotts are lighter so i dont go in for target shooting with them . its a very good calibre along with your .375 , so all you need is a 30-06 or .300 win mag and you are sorted for any african adventure. which you have to do asap :D

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
