Opinions on cheek pieces

For a classic straight high comb stock on scoped rifles, do you prefer your stock to have a cheek piece or not? I am more of a shotgun shooter than a rifle shooter, so I tend to favor no cheek piece, but I can definitely see the advantage when using a scope.

No cheek piece for me. I shoot with iron sights in my Model 70 .375 . But my wife also shoots my model 70 by attaching a scope to it and she doesn't really have any difficulties without the cheek piece.

Visually I like a cheek piece and have one on my semi-custom Thompson/Center Encore. but I've shot enough with and without to say it makes no difference. My Ruger #1 doesn't have one but is classy and functional so it's more a personal choice.

The cheekpiece is not a big deal one way or the other- what is important is that the comb is high enough that I can have a good cheek-weld and still be able to see through the scope- additionally the comb needs to be rounded enough (rather than thin and pointed) so that it doesn't jab my face during recoil.

Agreed, I like the cheek pieces on my custom stocks, but more from an artistic POV. I don’t think they add much functionally.

A stock is much more than its cheek piece. Cast, bend, drop, pitch, and so on... All play into whether a cheek piece belongs. But, I do like the look!

I seem to be the odd man out because I do not like the look of a cheek piece. I am all about clean lines on my guns and the cheek piece just seems to muck that up. It also seems that no one has an actual reason for including one other than looks.

They can serve a function and be of benefit on a rifle, but it’d look incredibly clunky and out of place on a London best shotgun so I can completely understand your view.

Not too many scoped London double shotguns, so cheek pieces out of place..........but when your line of sight is too low to see thru the scope, and one must raise his cheek off the stock to see the target, the wisdom a cheek piece becomes evident. The stitched rustic leather cheekpieces can be used and taken off, and actually look nice on some older rifles....like Savage 99's that were not made specifically with scopes in mind.............FWB
