CPD - continuing professional development - is a necessary component of many professional practices. Where I practice law I am required to have 12 hours a year. CPD is also a great way to keep current of tricks of the trade, or things not to do.

A recent thread https://www.africahunting.com/threa...round-part-1-buffalo.39016/page-4#post-373958 made me wonder how PHs keep up on the most current understanding of wildlife management, client management, and best practices.

Is there any equivalent in the PH world? Should there be?

Every walk in the Bush would be my guess.

I have only heard of re-qualification after someone was injured and might not be able to perform their duties in the field.

or let their license lapse.

But that would apply to all professionals, doing their job teaches them something. But, I think this is about elevating their game, staying informed etc.

I am not a fan of CPD or here in Texas called MCLE or MCJE. By the time you arrive at the course, you already know the material in the update. I would suspect the same would hold true for a PH.

I'm all for education but I see a few issues:
As a group they all don't believe or support one organizing body in a country.
Membership is voluntary in every PH organization.
First world concept in a Third world country.

I have no doubt you are correct. I perceive the lack of understanding outside of Africa creates issues there ( not the first time, for sure!) Market expectations may be a problem. It's troubling that Dr. Robertson feels only 4% of 8-11 year old bulls survive. And, it would seem hunting practices play a role. Now, we also do not know what percentage it should be (5% or 50%?)

I just cannot think of another way to equip the gatekeepers there with the training and tools they need in this case. There is a need for research that properly understands sustainable use, and a way to get the word out! I bet this applies to the whole lion aging/hunting too.

I also think being a PH is one hell of a lonely job. CPD could include current marketing tips/trends, health and safety issues, an excuse to get together etc. What if there was a stream for them at the DSC or SCI shows? That would give back a little anyway.

Just day dreaming a little here...

The show circuit is certainly an excellent training ground for the PH's.
Show up here after the show closes and you'll learn plenty. It's even in the bars motto!
