Hello all,

PH and outfitters, I am wanting to plan a photo safari for 4-5 days and do some hunting at the end with a few additional days. I would want to hunt a common duiker, cape bushbuck and blue wildebeest. (Maybe a caracal if time permitted)

I am flexible on days but think spending most of the time on a photo safari is a good way to get her on board.

What would be a ball park cost for this hunt, and rifle rental.

Just trying to make a budget and plan things out for several years in the future.

Thank you in advance

A few days might be a bit of stretch with that particular list of animals.. but Im sure you could be accommodated and an absolute best attempt would be made..

Caracals often take some time, as do bushbuck and duiker.. they arent the sort of animals that are easily found or hunted..

Most places will have a good number of blue wildebeest available.. Ive never found it hard to locate a good (sometimes great) blue in a matter of a day..

I'll shoot you a PM and see if Bos en Dal Safaris might be able to put something together that you'd be interested in...

That sounds great! And need be a timeline could definitely be extended, to accommodate that. Since I have time to plan out I would definitely want to do it the right way to hunt the species I plan on chasing. Thanks MD

Good day sir.
We will be able to assist you in the Lowveld of South Africa, appart from hunting safaris we do offer photographic safaris in Kruger national Park and surrounding areas.
Kind regards
Derian

Since you said Cape Bushbuck your hunting area is going to be limited. My suggestion would be @KAROO WILD Safaris

Fly into Cape Town, spend a couple days driving around sight seeing, hit a vineyard or two. Then either take the garden route towards Port Elizabeth or fly. Spend a couple days around Addo Elephant park maybe hunt Victor’s place north of Port Elizabeth after doing the photo thing and eventually making your way to Port Alfred for a couple days in the beach town. Stay at Oribi Haven if possible, your wife can shop, see the ocean and sights while you do a bit of Bushbuck and Carcal hunting. Your list can be accomplished in a couple days the one major exception is the Carcal. Even if you’re running hounds for them, it’s hit or miss.

If you’re open to any species of Bushbuck your options get a lot better and you can hunt closer to Kruger or something. I hunted with @MATTANJA HUNTING SAFARIS in December. My mom and girlfriend were both along for the trip. My mom is the furthest thing from a hunter and really enjoyed the trip. Spent a few days in Kruger for them doing the photo thing then hunted a few days but it was like each day hunting was an additional photo safari day for them.

Closer to Jburg you could hunt with @Safari Co. Africa and make a run to Kruger or even up to Vic Falls followed by a few days of hunting since their lodge is only a few hours from Jburg.

You’ve got options and a huge list of PH’s here on AH who can offer you a Photo Safari/Hunt like you want. I’ve hunted with all 3 I mentioned above.

The blue wildebeest is fairly common and typically easier to locate and hunt. Common duiker and Cape bushbuck are more elusive and require patience and careful tracking. Hunting caracal is specialized and usually needs a few dedicated days to be successful.

The structure and cost of the trip will also depend on the area you're considering for the photographic safari portion, as that will help determine logistics, accommodations, and how the hunting portion is arranged.

I'll drop you a dm with some ballpark info to look at and recommendations.

I have bookended hunts with photo camps several times.
If you coordinate it right you can be hunting the day you leave a photo camp.
Might want to look into one of the larger private camps in the East Cape (like Keriega that has big 5) That could be combined with a day at Addo and could meet your target list with minimal transfer time. Can combine that with an overnight in Port Elizabeth too, if you are looking for more non hunting vacation time.

Other option if you are looking for amazing close encounters with big cats especially leopard is Sabi Sands and find an outfit around Hoedspruit. Top camps in general, but comes with a higher price tag.

Might have to modify animal list a bit and be a bit more flexible if on a short hunt time frame.

Thanks for the info! I am more than happy to remove the caracal if it takes too much time away from the rest and add an impala or springbok, that way I can focus on those and primarily bushbuck (whether cape or Limpopo variety)

Another option you could look into that I've been recently examining is the KwaZulu Natal region of South Africa. There is an interesting photo safari only area called the Manyoni Game Reserve that is a neat looking area with a bunch of lodging options and they have the Big 5 there to photograph on game drives along with all of the antelope species. There are also several outfitters hunting the KZN region, some are sponsors here on AH, although I will say I've not hunted that area myself yet.

East Cape with my Team & I.... we are very familiar with hosting safaris like your wish list... with many references....AND we never overbook our Camp/Lodges.... We certainly cater for non-hunters, happy wife happy life happy hunting hahaha!!! Get in touch via email please and I will personally put the all-inclusive & detailed Safari together for you...I usually suggest a few different options, BUT nothing is a blueprint, so happy to make changes to fine tune your dream trip!!!
Please note: I also have a full time professional camera man in my team, whom yo may book to produce a lifetime memorable Video of your compete safari = at a fraction of the cost of freelancers

What if you sort of flipped the day allotment? 3 days for photo safari trips, and 4-5 days for hunting. Hunting is generally more difficult than going through photo areas, so it might be wise to divide your time based on that.

Also, would your wife be happy going to a hunting lodge with a large variety of animals and taking animal photos there? Because you could communicate with the PH/Outfitter that your wife getting good animal photos is just as important as you shooting animals. Then you could spend all 8 days doing both. Driving around looking at animals for your wife, and when a good Duiker or bushbuck pops up, you get to harvest it.
